“I don’t think about Hollywood, I’m not interested in Hollywood, I don’t need Hollywood.” This is how strong Johnny Depp showed himself this Wednesday in Cannes when asked about the possible boycott he is suffering from the industry in his country.
The actor made a triumphant return to Cannes -although he refuses to use the word “comeback”-, where he is the protagonist of the opening film of the festival, “Jeanne du Barry”, in which it is his first major public appearance after the closing of the trial with his ex-wife Amber Heardwho accused him of bullying.
“When you are asked to leave the film – the actor is removed from the saga ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ 2018– because there’s a bunch of vowels and consonants in the air, you wonder,” Depp said when asked if Hollywood had boycotted him.
But he added that he doesn’t have that impression, mainly because he doesn’t think Hollywood noting that although the world is going through a “strange, strange” phase where “everybody wants to be who you are, but nobody is”, he does feel “on the other side”.
“The truth is the truth,” said the actor, who recalled that “in five or six years” he read a lot of information about his life, “fiction told in a terrible and imaginative way.”
And about the campaign launched by the veterans amber to heard, who are calling for the festival to be shut down because of Depp’s guest appearance and for “celebrating abusers for 76 years,” the actor said there will always be people who are not happy with his presence in Cannes or McDonald’s.
“Many things are run from computers now, well anonymous. I think people should think a little and ask themselves what it’s really about,” he said.
The actor did not hesitate to answer personal questions despite the fact that upon arriving at the press conference – s 40 minutes late and when the film crew had already been talking for 20 years – he said that his performance in front of the media was not to talk about himself, but about the French project Maiwenn, who directs and stars in the film “Jeanne du Barry”, presented out of competition.
He also referred to numerous means who, with this film, are talking about a return to the world of cinematography. “Supposedly I had 17 comebacks,” joked Depp, who assured he didn’t go “anywhere.”
“Perhaps there are people who stopped calling me for various reasons, out of fear, but the word return has no meaning,” he thought.
Depp was the star of the press conference as he was last night at the gala presentation of the film and the red carpet that preceded the screening.
A crowd bath for an actor who has been accepted Cannes as a star but has a negative image in his country that he cannot overcome despite winning a defamation trial against his wife for publicly accusing him of abuse.
Another controversy in the film is the fact that Depp is acting King Louis XV instead of having a French actor do it.
In this regard, Maiwenn noted that he suggested the role to “French actors” whom he admires, but that in the end he decided to fuel his desire to have Depp play the monarch.
“When I met him, he knew history France“, pointed out the actress and director, who had her first meeting with the actor in Paris, which lasted about fifteen hours, during which they hardly talked about cinema.
It was a surprise for Depp that he was offered the role, but he accepted it and worked a lot on his accent – the actor speaks French because he was married to Vanessa Paradis.
Although she admits that Maiwenn “was hot to ask someone who comes from Kentucky play Louis XV.
“Jeanne du Barry” focuses on the love story in between Jeanne du Barry and Louis XV despite the fact that at first the script included many other love affairs of the courtesan and even her death, guillotined by the revolution.
The result is a classic period film about love between courtesans Jeanne du Barry (Maiwenn) and Louis XV. (Depp), which lasted until the monarch’s death despite the opposition of the royal family.
With a good part of the film Versailles and great formal preciousness, movie it is entertaining, well constructed and interesting because it tells a true story. And the leading pair are convincing in their roles, although the ensemble lacks strength.
