Plain of Magadino

The plain between Bellinzona and Locarno TI includes both farmland and virgin nature. These include wetlands of national importance, such as the Bolle di Magadino nature reserve around the mouths of the Ticino and Verzasca rivers in Lake Maggiore. Carefully designed nature trails allow for a visit without disturbing the resident wildlife too much. Among the reeds and alluvial forests, up to 300 species of birds can be spotted if you look closely – with a bit of luck, even the rare kingfisher! If you want to learn more about this exciting nature reserve, take a guided tour.

Brissago Islands

Located in Ascona Bay, the two Brissago Islands are a true gem of Lake Maggiore. The larger Isola di San Pancrazio, open to the public, can be reached by boat in just under an hour from Locarno TI and fifteen minutes from Ascona TI. There is a wonderful botanical garden on the island, which is home to plant and tree species from five continents. A long walk takes visitors into a completely different world, while the beautiful Lago Maggiore shines through the rich vegetation. There is a treasure hunt for little visitors – they playfully discover nature’s treasures in their own way.

3

Pastoral Ascona

With its colorful houses and numerous restaurants, Ascona’s picturesque promenade invites you to linger. Especially thanks to the mild climate and bohemian spirit of the old fishing village, you feel like you are on holiday here. Once a popular destination for artists of all kinds, Ascona still has numerous art galleries on its intricate streets, such as the Borgo district. JazzAscona, which takes place every summer, and the many cultural events held throughout the year further add to Ascona’s artistic flair.

4

Powerful Monte Verita

In the early 20th century, the hill behind the town of Ascona was revived by side thinkers, philosophers and artists who at the time had noticed the powerful energy of the place. Because Monte Verità is one of the official places of power in Ticino. Anyone who visits the vast 72,000-square-metre Monte Verità park will feel the peaceful atmosphere that reigns here. There is also a tea plantation where green and black tea has been produced since 2006. The Zen garden inside the park also invites you to linger. On the “mountain of truth”, history, tradition, research and spirituality harmoniously intertwine.

5

Lido Locarno

To fully enjoy Lake Maggiore, it is worth visiting Lido Locarno. A total of eight water pools and four slides offer fun and sportive opportunities for young and old. In summer, the beautiful sandy beach on the shores of Lake Maggiore can also be accessed from the large lawn. If you want some wellness and relaxation, you can visit Termali Salini & Spa, a wellness oasis adjacent to the Lido. Saunas, Turkish baths, salt water swimming pools and much more can be experienced here in the most beautiful atmosphere. So every water lover around Lido Locarno gets their money’s worth.

6

A detour to the Italian side

About 80 percent of Lake Maggiore is located on the Italian side, in the regions of Lombardy and Piedmont. Therefore, it makes sense to go beyond the limit when visiting the site. The town of Cannobio (I) is particularly beautiful. You get a real Italian feel along the picturesque lake promenade lined with palm trees. This also continues in the medieval center of the city where there are many cafes and restaurants on many small streets. A little further north inland is the medieval settlement of “Carmine Superiore”, from which incredible views of Lake Maggiore open up, but can be reached on foot.

7

Gambarogno Riviera

The municipality of Gambarogno TI, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, was formed by the merging of different settlements and today stretches from the Italian border to the Magadino plain. It impresses visitors with the typical charm of the villages and the long Riviera. Inland, the gentle hills are ideal for hiking in chestnut forests. The advantage of the eastern shore of the lake: it offers a clear view of the snowy peaks of the Alps and at the same time enjoys hours of sunshine. The temperate climate also benefits the flora. Gambarogno Botanical Garden offers a collection of no less than 450 magnolia species!
