Doubs river

The Doubs meanders idyllicly along the Swiss-French border, forming an incredibly beautiful riverscape. To make sustainable and careful use of this area, the Doubs regional nature park was established, which is now recognized by the federal government as a nature park of national importance. Saut du Doubs, the highest waterfall in the Jura, is particularly impressive and showcases the wild side of the normally gentle river. The waterfall can be reached in 50 minutes on foot from Les Brenets train station. Or by boat with Lac des Brenets shipping company and in comfort a 10-minute walk from the pier.

Features of Val-de-Travers

Anyone who makes a trip to Val-de-Travers will be surprised how little-known historical and cultural treasures there are to discover here in Neuchâtel Jura. On the one hand, the long-forbidden absinthe appeared in this mysterious valley. On the other hand, the asphalt mines of La Presta are also here. The underground passages, which were in operation until 1986, can now be visited daily on a guided tour. Afterwards, Café des Mines welcomes its guests with an interesting specialty: ham cooked on asphalt. Don’t worry, some baking paper is placed between the black asphalt and the savory ham before the ham is cooked for a few hours. This juicy favorite is followed by absinthe, fennel and anise as a night drink with the scent of absinthe.

Jura mountains

Most people are familiar with the natural amphitheater created by Creux du Van and symbolizes the impressive natural landscapes of the Jura. The Swiss Grand Canyon is always worth a visit, but it is by far not the only feature of the mountainous world of northwest Switzerland. A trip to the Chasseral and a walk along its ridge are also worthwhile. The striking elevation, visible from afar thanks to the powerful antenna, is the perfect place to sunbathe on foggy days, even while having a “right” coffee at Hotel Chasseral. Its terrace offers a magnificent view of the snowy Alpine peaks rising from the sea of fog. Real classics like the Berner Platter are on the menu for hungry visitors.

Romantic promenade on Lake Neuchatel

The largest lake entirely located in Switzerland, it is characterized by viticulture along its northern shore and the largest marshland in Switzerland along its southern shore. In between, there are numerous cities, all with their own charm. For example Yverdon-les-Bains, Estavayer-le-lac and of course Neuchâtel itself… It is worth taking a boat trip to discover the diversity of Lake Neuchâtel. For all romantics and connoisseurs, the day can end especially nicely on Neuchâtel’s coastline, Quai Ostervald. The sunsets, accompanied by the vast view of the lake, radiate a Mediterranean air and invite you to be enchanted by the here and now.

Neuchatel’s green oasis

The romantic Vallon de l’Ermitage valley contrasts beautifully with the vast blue of Lake Neuchâtel. It sits just above the town of Neuchâtel and is home to a botanical garden, Center Dürrenmatt and Roche de l’Ermitage viewpoint. The green oasis can be reached in just fifteen minutes on foot from the city centre. The journey to the green oasis with the La Coudre funicular to the top of Chaumont is particularly beautiful. From there, the timeway, with seventeen statues depicting the evolution of life on Earth, takes you within an hour to the Vallon de l’Ermitage, with uninterrupted panoramic views of the lake. Café de l’Ermitage invites you to linger in the summer months after you arrive.

pearls of Jura

In addition to the enormous Lake Neuchâtel, numerous small lakes in Jura invite you to explore them. First of all, Etang de la Gruère. This pond is located in the middle of a protected raised marsh between the villages of Saignelégier and Tramelan. Lake Tailleres, near La Brevine, is just as idyllic. The coldest high valley in Switzerland usually has the lowest temperatures in Switzerland in winter, making the lake freezing surrounded by fir trees. The region is also a destination worth visiting in the summer months. Finally, the Bonfol pond view should be mentioned. The three ponds invite you to discover the unique flora and fauna at any time of the year or day.

The mastery of the watchmaker

Jura is the stronghold of watchmaking – reason enough to devote some time to these arts. Two places stand out in particular: Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds. The cityscape made up of these two cities was recognized by Unesco in 2009 for its universal value. The world’s largest watch museum is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where a total of more than 4000 different watches are displayed, giving a deeper impression of this craft. During the tour of watch manufacturer Zenith in Le Locle, the entire production process of a watch is explained and examined. For a special experience, although it’s not cheap, you can book your own mechanical watchmaking workshop.
