“Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3” has started hitting cinemas around the world (and more than decently so far), so it’s time for James Gunn to turn his attention back to his next project: along with producer Peter Safran, Gunn directs the fate of the DC movies and series from now on and, as director and screenwriter, is also personally responsible for the film that should kick off the new DC Universe (DCU): “Superman: Legacy”.
Appropriately, the casting process for the new “Superman” movie now seems to be slowly entering its hot phase: after rumors circulated for a long time, most of which were dismissed by Gunn himself, there are now the first reports from reliable sources about the names in the race for the three (probably) biggest roles: Superman, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane.
super dude
Like the American industry magazine reported, is located David Korenswet (“Pearl”, “Look Both Ways”) are among the top candidates to play Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman. Corenswet is scheduled to do test shooting for “Superman: Legacy” in late May, early June and has made it to the next round, so to speak. However, there may be other candidates as well .
Netflix star Jacob Elordi, whose name circulated early on, appears to have been on the list of those responsible, but was never interested in the role himself. So since he wasn’t interested in the role, he should be off the table for good. The same applies according to the for Tom Brittney and Andrew Richardson.
Lex Luthor
While there seem to be several names in the running for the role as Superman, some are loud only one real candidate for his great opponent Lex Luthor: Nicholas Holt, who has already gained a lot of superhero experience as Hank McCoy / Beast in the newer “X-Men” films and most recently convinced in “The Menu”. However, he is said to have a rock on the board at Warner and DC, mainly due to his role in “Mad Max: Fury Road” where he was bald like Lex Luthor.
In the magazine Nicholas Hoult, on the other hand, is classified in the group of Superman candidates with David Corenswet, Jacob Elordi and Andrew Richardson. Rather, according to Deadline writer Justin Kroll, Gunn will be paired with one of his Guardians cast members (maybe Will Poulter?) talked about the role as Luthor. The journals disagree on that.
Lois Lane
For Superman’s great love Lois Lane, who, like his alter ego Clark Kent, is a reporter for the Daily Planet, there would be four names in the running: Emma Mackey rose to fame with Netflix’s Sex Education and will soon star in Warner’s Barbie movie. Phoebe Dynevor also celebrated her breakthrough with a Netflix series, namely with the first season “Bridgerton”.
Samara weaving is also known from Netflix, namely from the two “Babysitter” films, but also made a name for itself with action and horror films such as “Ready Or Not”, “Guns Akimbo” and most recently “Scream VI”. And then there is Rachel Brosnahan (“House Of Cards”, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), which according to to have completed an “excellent” audition. However, it is not yet clear which of the four will be invited to test recordings.
In addition, Superman and Lois Lane’s castings are likely linked. Very often the top candidates in such roles also do joint admission tests to see who has the best chemistry in front of the camera, so in the end you may not have two big stars in your own right, but somehow you don’t. t harmonize with each other on the screen.
In any case, the casting process is still in a very early stage, both trade journals emphasize. So completely different stars might as well slip into the three reels. In addition, James Gunn also announced on Twitter that he did not want to comment on the above names (which is in any case not a denial as was sometimes the case in the past). So far, however, only one person has been cast for “Superman: Legacy” – and that as none of the well-known characters from Superman’s circle.
“Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to hit German cinemas on July 10, 2025.
