There have always been major crossover events in the comics, but usually publishing giants Marvel and DC each do their own thing, especially when it comes to the film adaptations of Iron Man, Captain America and Co. and on the other hand Batman, Superman and their comrades-in-arms*, where the major Hollywood studios Disney and Warner Bros. still behind the comic forges.
The biggest sentiments in recent years have been small allusions in dialogue, like when Superman makes an Iron Man pun in the animated adventure “DC League Of Super-Pets”, Stan Lee makes a cameo in DC’s “Teen Titans GO! To The Movies ‘ or being mentioned in the MCU extravaganza ‘Eternals’ and the ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special’ Superman and Batman.
But now we’re going a subtle step further James Gunn in “Guardians of the Universe Part 3“, in which he actually makes a character appear from the DC cosmos. If you look closely towards the end of the film, you can also spot an eagle among the lab animals in the cages of the High Evolutionary (Chuckwudi Iwuji). And it’s very reminiscent of the titular anti-hero’s trusty winged pet in James Gunn’s DC series Peacemaker – for one simple reason. As Gunn has now confirmed on Twitter, this is probably actually Eagly:
The fact that Gunn Eagly was able to get into a Marvel production at all may have something to do with the fact that the name of the animal itself is never explicitly mentioned in “Guardians Of The Galaxy 3” and so it would also be a completely different bird on paper. . James Gunn may also have benefited from inventing Eagly for his The Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker in the first place, so the eagle doesn’t originate in the DC comics (although it appears there by now, too).
Will there be a major Marvel-DC crossover?
Of course, despite his popularity with Peacemaker fans, Eagly may not be one of the great DC heroes, but he is made comic book history as the first DC character to make the leap into an MCU adventure. And who knows? Perhaps this is just the beginning. While it’s only built into “Guardians 3” as a tongue-in-cheek Easter egg, it’s not impossible that one day we’ll actually see a major Marvel-DC crossover event in theaters, as it’s already been done several times in the comics. . After all, that would also be a way to surpass the ever-increasing bombast of blockbusters.
And with the (ex) “Guardians” director and newly minted DC Studios boss James Gunn, you’d also have someone on hand who could act as a suitable link here. In fact, Gunn recently revealed that with him at the helm, such a clash of DC and Marvel heroes has not only become more likely, but even discussed. However, this should not be expected in the foreseeable future as both parties have other plans for the MCU and the upcoming revised DCU in the coming years.
