The multi-award-winning wine list at Jack’s Brasserie in Bern is a magnet for wine lovers.

In a Switzerland-wide series, Blick explains which restaurants stand out for their great wine lists. This edition is followed by the canton of Bern after Zurich.

Jack’s Pub

Wiener Schnitzel is the flagship of Jack’s Brasserie. But the restaurant’s award-winning wine list at the Hotel Schweizerhof, not far from the Bern train station, is also impressive. The best-known local and international wine regions are represented on more than 60 pages. The wide range of Burgundy and the selection of special formats are particularly striking. Half bottles from well-known manufacturers like Château Montrose or Angelo Gaja can be found, as well as bottles of Magnum and even Jéroboam from hits like Hacienda Monasterio or Anne-Claire Schott.

Wine and Asset

It’s called the program! Wine-loving hours are guaranteed in the Bern old town restaurant, decorated with a star from the Michelin Guide. Hostess Daniela Jaun curates the wine list with a great passion and good hand for terroir-influenced wines. She thinks mainly of the small wineries she visits in person. You should not miss the wine tour, which is perfectly adapted to the gourmet menu and served according to all the rules of the art of the sommelier.

radius

The wonderful Alpine panorama in Interlaken is reason enough for a trip to the Bernese Oberland. Another is Radius’s Wine Bible at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. The ingredients for the artistic dishes come from within a 50km radius of the house. In keeping with this philosophy, Torsten Noack’s sommelier team offers a tempting selection of 80 local crus, all by the glass, from Lake Thun and Lake Biel, alongside international wines. These include Bernese Winemaker of the Year 2022, Nick Bösiger from Twanner Weingut Frauenkopf, and specialties from Spiez Alpine Wine Culture.

stone hall

Wouldn’t a Michelin star and jeans go together? Steinhalle at the Museumsquartier in Bern proves the opposite. Comfort is truly celebrated here. But things are very serious when it comes to wine and food. Creative cuisine with drink accompaniments has been fine-tuned and priced more than fair. There is also a nice kaleidoscope of a la carte. Tried-and-tested lovers will get their money’s worth here, like those who are curious and want to explore promising wine regions such as China and Slovenia, or non-traditional wine producers such as Aargauer Hauksson.

Mille Sens

Mille Sens is somehow hidden in Bern’s Schweizerhof-Passage. What is on offer is anything but inconspicuous. Chef Domingo S. Domingo creates sophisticated compositions by blending the Filipino flavors of his homeland with local ingredients. The on-site wine shop also leaves nothing to be desired. Written by wine-sensation expert Urs Messerli, the wine list presents exciting attractions from Switzerland and all over Europe. The vast majority come from near-nature, organic or biodynamic production. Finds and single bottles from the Kollwentz winery in Burgenland or Tenuta Castello di Morcote in Ticino are also available.

16 Art Bar Restaurants

Saanen is definitely a mecca for climbers. Those who prefer to relax with an excellent glass of wine and a quality entrecote can make a pilgrimage to the old bell foundry. The venerable building is stylishly appointed and features a wine list from wine connoisseurs that will cause more than just ahh and ah’s. The abundance of mature specimens is hard to beat. Barolo aficionados will revel in the rare vintage products of the outstanding winemaker Giuseppe Rinaldi, while Riesling aficionados will delight in names like JJ Prüm or Egon Müller.

Closer wine cage

After visiting Bärengraben in the federal city, the Klösterli wine cafe beckons you. Bottles from carefully selected small producers pile up on the wine racks. In addition to an extensive Tour de Suisse, the wine list also allows for a tour of European lands, from Lake Neusiedl to the Canary Islands. It’s hard to decide on a bottle… The extraordinary variety that the glass offers helps. 20 wines are available by the glass and are changed regularly.

Toi and Moi

Wine dreams come true in Bern’s bustling city centre. Could there be a Château Mouton Rothschild 1 today?HE Grand Cru Classé with beef tartare from 2002? Or do you prefer a legendary 1997 Penfolds Grange for Surf & Turf? The Toi & Moi restaurant’s impressive wine list is high quality and uplifting: from Valais to Amigne to California to Zinfandel, you can choose from over 300 wines from all over the world.
