According to an old farmer’s rule, the so-called “Ice Saints” provide the last frost. But who follows the rule? In any case, Peter doesn’t seem to take this seriously. Because according to the weather forecast of Meteo News, the weather will only be rainy next week.

With the ski season already over in many places, it’s now snowing in the mountains up to 1600 to 2000 meters high – just in time for the Ice Saints to kick off on Thursday. For example, the webcam from Hoch-Ybrig (1825 meters) shows an all-white landscape, but the chairlifts there have been standing still since 8 May.

The Ice Saints are from May 11 to May 15 each year. And even if it does not get very cold, it is worth protecting especially sensitive plants from dying from the cold. The most important thing is to cover the already planted plants with fleece.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, basil

Anyone who has planted it in their balcony or garden now has to take care of their plants. Ramona Küng from the garden center Guggenbühl in Bonstetten ZH shows what hobby gardeners should pay attention to. “It’s important to protect your plants,” says the gardener. Particularly sensitive to cold: Tomatoes, cucumbers and basil: “It’s better for them to take them home overnight.” Important: You should quickly bring the plants back outside as soon as the temperatures allow.

For less sensitive greens such as lettuce or kohlrabi, it is sufficient to cover the plants with garden fleece. “This also applies to summer flowers,” Küng says. In general, potted plants can also be brought to a safe place close to the wall of the house: “The plants are protected there and can survive in low temperatures.”

There’s also a tip for lazy hobby gardeners: “Those who wait until the icy saints to plant seeds are usually on the safe side – and can still be back in full range.”

Especially sensitive plants

Tomatoes, fennel, basil, verbena or flowering strawberries are particularly susceptible. Like apple trees, now-blooming fruit trees are susceptible. If they are too large to be closed, it can be hoped that the flowers will survive and there will still be apples in the fall.

Tulips, lettuce or kohlrabi are not affected by frost.

For this, balcony plants – especially geraniums – need to be protected from freezing. But just hang the flower boxes on the wall of the house. The heat this gives is usually sufficient. In an emergency, you can also bring the plants into the apartment, but only overnight. They don’t take a lot of heat either.
