In 1998, Lindsay Lohan recommended herself as a promising child star with the film adaptation of “A Twin Comes Alone.” Five years later, however, her success really took off with her final breakthrough role in the body-swapping comedy “Freaky Friday” — and now the now 36-year-old is drawn back to the hit. After Lohan gave her struggling career a new boost in 2022 with the Netflix Christmas RomCom “Falling For Christmas”, it is now clear: Freaky Friday gets a sequel two decades after the first part – with the original cast from back then.
It means that not just Lindsay Lohan, but also the Hollywood veteran and newly crowned Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) back on board is. This is confirmed by, among other things . Both had expressed great interest in such a sequel in the past. Corresponding talks with the Disney production studio have now apparently been successful.
This is Freaky Friday
Freaky Friday (2003) is a reworking of the cult novel Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers, which was previously adapted twice, once for films in the 1970s starring Jodie Foster and once for television in the 1990s (there are was also a musical remake for Disney Channel in 2018 and a slasher comedy tribute to Freaky in 2020).
At the center of the action are successful psychotherapist Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan), who just don’t understand each other anymore. But everything changes when, thanks to two fortune cookies, they switch bodies and literally find themselves in each other’s shoes – and this can only be reversed if they resolve their conflicts.
While they did it successfully back then, it’s safe to assume that Tess and Anna will switch bodies again in Freaky Friday 2, but now women in their 60s and 30s are grappling with very different issues. In any case, Jamie Lee Curtis already said that she would like to see Lohan as a sexy grandma in the sequel. However, it is still unclear when exactly that will happen. It is also unclear whether the film will be shown in cinemas again or whether it will appear directly on Disney +where of course part 1 (just like the 1970s version and the aforementioned musical remake) can also be listened to.
