‘Radical Communal Care and Liberation’ opened its doors

The series “Radical communal care and liberation”, an intervention by Giana De Dier, opened its doors at the Museo del Canal.

This is the result of the first one museum artist residency and will be open to the public until December of this year.

The artist was chosen to intervene with her works, one of permanent premises of the museumafter a three-phase research work, with the aim of promoting dialogue and exchange between his artistic practice and the work of the Museo del Canal team through its collections.

After 25 years of sharing history, the museum is opening up space for new perspectives on such a key part of Panamanian history and who came to build the Panama Canal.

The aim of the institution is to visibility to new narratives around our history and be a platform for art in all its expressions.

Panamanian collage artist, Gianna DeDier, Part of the museum’s permanent exhibition in the La Vida room in the Canal Zone, he intervened with 9 works created to make the viewer think about the leisure and leisure of black women during the construction of the canal.

De Dier recreates the fantasy by setting up black women enjoy moments resting in public spaces that were most likely exclusively for white women.

These women break with the prevailing colonial narrative the time when they eroticize and ridiculed for their lifestyle and customs, inspiration from the book “The Maid in Panama” written by Sue Core.

“I hope that with these works I will be able to fill the void that I feel exists photo files that document the experience of Afro-Caribbean women in the Canal Zone and in Panama City,” explained artist Giana De Dier.
