Besides Clark Kent aka Superman, “Superman: Legacyyet another DC Superhero – or more specifically, a DC Superdog. We are, of course, talking about cryptowho comes from the planet Krypton like Superman in the DC comics, has similar powers to his supermaster and even wears a red cape.
Krypto’s performance was discussed by “Superman: Legacy” director and screenwriter James Gunn and his “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” actor Chris Pratt in an interview with the out. Basically, the conversation was about how the two would have handled leaving the MCU (for Gunn, who’s moving to DC) and each other.
“I was hoping to cast you as Krypto the Super Dog in ‘Superman: Legacy,'” Gunn tells Pratt in the conversation. “You could do motion capture on set [also die Bewegungen der computeranimierten Figur vorgeben] and walk around on hands and knees, but you mustn’t talk.”
The two then joked that Pratt would then have to be paid in cryptocurrency as well, before confirming that the crypto wasn’t just a joke: “You’ve got an exclusive, I think,” says Gunn.
Live-action premiere for Krypto
Krypto’s live-action debut seems imminent, recently starring in the DC League Of Super-Pets animated film and also in the DC live-action series Titans.
In the comics, Krypto serves as a test subject of sorts before the scientist Jor-El then sends his son Kal-El (later Superman) to Earth in a starship from the doomed planet of Krypton. However, because the spaceship with crypto has now gone off course, it will not arrive on earth until later.
It remains to be seen if Gunn will tackle this subject of animal testing as he did in “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” or what the super dog origin story looks like in “Superman: Legacy”. The more recent DC stories have adapted the original version of the events described above.
A more comedic Superman?
Anyway: The appearance of a flying dog shooting laser beams from its eyes definitely suggests that the new DC Universe (DCU), overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is a lot closer to the comics than the often trying serious and gloomy DCEU with “Batman V Superman”, “Justice League” and Co.
It will probably be similar to the new DCU Batman movie “The Brave And The Bold”, which will feature not only the Dark Knight, but also other members of the Bat-Family. This includes Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s biological teenage son, who takes on the identity of Batman sidekick Robin, as in the DC Comics.
“Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to hit German cinemas on July 10, 2025.
