New Disney film mercilessly falls through with viewers: ‘Classic ruined’

Jennifer Ullrich / watson.de

Some Disney classics are now under scrutiny for serving racist or sexist stereotypes. The first applies, for example, to “Peter Pan” from 1953 and its depiction of indigenous peoples. To correct this, the group has now launched a remake: “Peter Pan & Wendy”, directed by David Lowery. The cast includes Jude Law, who slipped into the role of villain Captain Hook.

A few days after the release on streaming service Disney Plus, however, it became clear that the calculation is not really correct, at least according to many people who have already seen the remake.

The film has been running on the streaming service platform Disney Plus since April 28 and has never been released in cinemas.

At “Rotten Tomatoes” the overall rating is devastating. Fans and professional critics can give their opinion here, which is then summarized in a score. The live-action film only has 13 percent of viewers.

Accordingly, the comments on the platform are harsh. “Why does Disney think its characters are even remotely likeable? Wendy is a brat and Peter Pan is so boring,” said one person. Another user calculates:

Even the nasty question “When will Disney stop ruining its classics?” can be found below the comments. In recent years, the group has received several critical acclaim for their remakes, including the new editions of “Mulan” and “The Lion King”. A reproach that is raised time and time again: instead of creating new stories, Disney cannibalizes the known.

The virtual database “IMDb” also shows a bleak picture from Disney’s point of view. Nearly 40 percent of all voters rated “Peter Pan & Wendy” with only one star out of ten.

But not only the reviews on the rating platforms are disappointing. “Der Standard” writes that “Lowery’s colorless and joyless film falls short of expectations”. And CNN’s critic thinks the movie fails the test of returning to Neverland and the “Disney production that – unlike the beloved and venerable story that inspired it – never really takes off.”

The criticism of the American entertainment magazine “Variety” is also negative. They write that this live-action Disney adaptation is “one of the least imaginative” and that “in Disney’s rush to adapt more of their precious material, the studio is relegating another classic to mere “content” to be flushed downstream and to forget.” “.

When judging whether the movie is a hit or a flop, the streaming provider looks not only at the reviews, but mainly at the number of views – and they are usually hidden from the public.
