It is no coincidence that Christopher Nolan took on the life story of Julius Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and the development of the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project for his new movie “Oppenheimer”. After all, Nolan recently stated that he “didn’t know of a more dramatic, higher-stakes story” than this.
And the performance seems to have been extremely exciting, at least according to the reactions to the first material shown at CinemaCon. And the trailers released so far will also give you goosebumps – the very latest and final trailer for “Oppenheimer” is no exception. The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, according to Nolan, is “a dream and a nightmare at the same time”. – and that’s right, considering what an ingenious but at the same time horrific invention the atomic bomb was.
“Father of the Atomic Bomb”
During the Second World War Physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer is assigned to develop a nuclear weapon at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. As is known, the project was crowned with success, earning Oppenheimer the dubious title of “father of the atomic bomb”. After the bomb was used with gruesome results in Hiroshima and Nagaski, Oppenheimer condemned further use of his invention and was even suspected of being a Soviet spy.
Oppenheimer is played by Cillian Murphy, just one of dozens of big names in Christopher Nolan’s stellar ensemble: Emily Blunt plays Oppenheimer’s wife, biologist Kitty Oppenheimer. Matt Damon is featured as Lt. Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project, Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss of the US Atomic Energy Commission. Other stars include Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Casey Affleck, David Dastmalchian, Matthias Schweighöfer and many, many more.
Incidentally, Christopher Nolan called Oppenheimer “the most important person who ever lived” for shaping the world as we know it today. How Nolan implements the story you can see for yourself, when “Oppenheimer” hits theaters on July 20, 2023.
