Fans of unnerving shark shockers will especially enjoy the middle part of “47 Meters Down: Uncaged”. As we describe in our FILMSTARTS review, director Johannes Roberts (“Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City”) shot it in a very exciting, atmospheric and visually appealing way. The finale then turned out to be somewhat dubious and was probably only conceived that way because of the colossal success of “Meg”. Nevertheless, you can enjoy it and get in the mood for “Meg 2”, which will be released in August.
“47 Meters Down: Uncaged” will be broadcast for the first time on German Free TV on May 6, 2023. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is the sequel to Roberts’ 47 Meters Down. It became a surprise hit in the summer of 2017, grossing almost twelve times its production budget at the box office. However, none of the characters from the predecessor are present in the sequel, nor do the stories have any real leads. If you like what you see tonight, you can easily push the predecessor without worrying about spoilers.
“47 Meters Down: Uncaged” on VOX: That’s the story
Shy Mia (Sophie Nélisse) has moved from California to Mexico with her blended family. So that she and her stepsister Sasha (Corinne Foxx), who is the same age but much more outgoing, can get a little closer, the parents have booked the teens to go on a shark tour together on a tourist boat.
However, Sasha does not feel like the journey and prefers to be picked up by her friends (Brianne Tju, Sistine Rose Stallone). Somewhat hesitantly, the trio eventually take Mia to a lagoon hidden in the jungle. There they want to explore a submerged ruined city of the Mayan culture with scuba diving equipment.
First of all, the four really have a lot of fun together. But then they realize they are not alone in the winding underwater labyrinth. Huge sharks are suddenly chasing the panicked girls. When the cave entrance collapses and they run out of oxygen, their end seems to have come…
Like fathers, like daughters
Two of the actresses who embody the young women in mortal danger have big names. These are Sixtine Rose Stallone and Corinne Foxx, the daughters of world stars Sylvester Stallone and Jamie Foxx. Both had previously worked as models and in reality TV formats. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged was Stallone and Foxx’s first appearance on the big screen.
Like its predecessor, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged was another worldwide box office success. A third part is not currently in the works. Franchise mastermind Johannes Roberts remains loyal to the sea monsters with the sharp teeth. In February 2023, he was announced as the director of The Red Triangle, a planned summer blockbuster about white sharks terrorizing the passengers of a sinking cruise ship.
