This is how cats stay out of your garden

Anyone who finds cat remains in their yard will eventually be annoyed by the cat’s visit.

Anyone who doesn’t have a cat that is territorial enough to protect their property from other cats, or a dog that repels them, is probably familiar with this problem: the neighbor’s cat sneaks into other people’s gardens, preys on birds and mice, and also likes to leave their cats there, its own business. It can be very annoying when you have to keep removing the residue.

It’s usually not good to talk to cat owners about it, since they hardly affect where the animal raids. Luckily, there are other animal-friendly resources that can help velvet paws choose other green spaces for restrooms.

1. Harp bush

A rather inconspicuous herb that has a deterrent effect on many cats: the harp bush, also known as the moth king. At garden centers, the shrub is also often found as an “angry plant” because its essential oils are said to keep house tigers away. The spicy scent of the green herb doesn’t bother people, but many cats do.

But if you want to be successful with this method, one seed is not enough. It is best to plant the shrub in different places in the garden and – if known – also where velvet claws are usually found on the property.

2. Mint

The fresh scent of mint can also scare cats out of the garden. If you are planting the popular medicinal and aromatic herb, it is best to plant several plants so that the essential oils can diffuse well in the air.

3. Freshly mown grass

Cats dislike the smell of mown grass. They avoid such gardens and only return there after a while, when the air is clear enough for their sensitive noses again. Mowing the lawn regularly is a harmless way to deter cats.

4. Coffee grounds

If you put coffee grounds in different parts of the soil, it can also protect against unwanted cats visiting the garden. Animals generally do not like the smell. Another advantage of this simple remedy is that it is a fertilizer for plants.

5. Pepper

Pepper is inexpensive and effective if sprinkled on green areas and beds. Sharpness bothers cats when sniffing, which is often part of identifying scent trails.

6. Onion

If you don’t mind the smell, you can also spread the chopped onions in the garden. These smell so strong that most cats prefer to look for another litter box. If you have dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs or other pets that are not very picky and eat onion pieces, it is better to use a different method.

7. Garlic

The garlic clove deters most cats, but their smell can also bother the human nose. It’s also important here that no other pets that might eat the garlic use the garden. Animals often do not know what is good or bad for them.

8. Pebbles

Velvet paws can help disperse gravel in beds, as they rarely do their job on gravel. Stones are not good for scratching and are quite uncomfortable to walk on, so many cats step less on such surfaces.

9. Coarse mulch

Bark mulch is also a pet-friendly solution to keeping cats away. It has a peculiar smell and is quite unpleasant for the tiger when entering the house.

10. Special granules against cats

There are even special granules that emit an intense scent, often called “cat granules”. This is available online or in specialized stores. The essential oils of garlic are often included in it.

To protect the granules from cat droppings, simply sprinkle them on the soil in the beds.

11. Audible electric motion detector

Another way to keep cats out of green spaces is to install a motion-detector device known as a ‘cat deterrent’ outside. As soon as a movement is recorded, a high-pitched tone is heard, which may even be ultrasound-based. The sound keeps cats away, but can also bother other animals and is more expensive to purchase than other gadgets, especially in weatherproof versions.

12. Scare away cats

If you see a cat in your garden and you don’t want it there, you can hiss, whistle or clap it away. Noise confuses animals, they often run away. Ideally, velvet paws will remember this next time and look for other green spaces for their outings.

You also often read that you can squirt water at cats to scare them away. However, you have to be careful not to really get them wet.
