A screenwriter strike is raging in Hollywood. We have worked out more details for you in a separate article about the background to the strike. Little by little, however, the affected projects are becoming known – especially since many screenwriters communicate on social media that they have stopped working, are on strike and are now in front of the headquarters of Netflix, Disney and Co. stand for their protest rights.
Among the affected projects is “Big mouth“. The ‘dirtiest Netflix series’ is almost entering its seventh season. This will be followed by a final eighth season. According to the streaming service, the series is one of Netflix’s biggest hits, with more than a billion hours of viewing, but the story of nasty hormone monsters manipulating young people is slowly being told. Therefore, there must be a well-rounded, well-thought-out and conciliatory conclusion for 2024.
But this is where the Hollywood strike comes in. Because the scripts for the final season should actually be made right now. This is reported by the industry magazine the team behind the series has been hard at work over the past six weeks on its final season. The plan was to have the scripts for season 8 finished in August. But with the start of the strike, this work was stopped.
“Big Mouth”: Fewer Episodes for Season 8?
It is still unclear how long the strike will last. So far, it doesn’t look like the conflict over better and fairer pay for screenwriters will be resolved any time soon. The consequences of this for each individual series are currently incalculable. It is of course possible that schedules just shift. Netflix may then give the writers behind ‘Big Mouth’ until September, October or November to write the scripts in the event of a strike of several weeks.
However, since animation projects in particular have a certain lead time and Netflix certainly does not want too long to pass between the seventh and eighth seasons, a different scenario is more likely in the event of a longer strike: The hiatus may affect how many episodes fans get in the final season.
That would be an easy way to stick to the original schedule as much as possible despite the delay. You just wrote and then produced fewer episodes, which is less than the ten episodes a season of Big Mouth normally has.
Whether this will happen is still unknown. Currently, some projects are already known, such as the series “Yellowjackets” or the comic success “Abbott Elementary”, which required a break in the middle of the writing process. But it is still too early to say what will happen, because a lot also depends on how long the strike will last.
For “Big Mouth” Seasons 7 & 8: The 2nd Season “Human Resources”
So while fans will have to wait a bit longer to see if the eighth season of “Big Mouth” is now shorter than planned and waiting for the seventh season anyway, more will be coming soon from the “Human Resources” spin-off. For the second season of the spin-off, which describes itself as “even more mature and even more unusual” than “Big Mouth”, the second season of the ten-episode spin-off has now been revealed with an announcement teaser no only the date, but also many involved guest stars:
Human Resources Season 2 is coming to Netflix on June 9, 2023. In addition to Florence Pugh and Miley Cyrus featured in the teaser, Eugene Levy, Jason Mantzoukas and Isabella Rossellini will also be present.
