Reporters Without Borders said Wednesday that this has alleviated an unprecedented climate of intimidation, hostility and even physical violence by those who oppose the pandemic measures. These attacks dropped Switzerland from 10th place to 14th place in 2022.

However, the level of press freedom did not return to 2021 levels. For this reason, freedom of the press in Switzerland is only rated as “fairly good”. This is because of the legislature. In this sub-indicator, Switzerland dropped from 29th to 37th place.

On the one hand, this is due to the Parliament’s removal of the temporary measure barrier against the media. This allows a court to stop reports when an affected party could be disadvantaged. Before that, it had to prove to be a particularly serious disadvantage.

Banking law undermines freedom of information

On the other hand, the “mouthpiece” clause in the Banking Law continues to restrict freedom of information. Swiss journalists face up to three years in prison for reports based on leaked or stolen bank data. The economic situation of many media remains fragile, affecting the media diversity sub-indicator.

Norway 1st place

The current 21st international ranking identifies the status of press freedom as very bad in 31 countries, difficult in 42 countries and problematic in 55 countries. The worst performers were Vietnam (178th), China (179th), and North Korea (180th).
