Temperature, light or sound – everything is centrally controlled and harmonious.

The smart home is a rapidly evolving segment. Still, it awaits the big breakthrough. Why: There are so many different standards that play a role in the networking of familiar but not yet so smart home devices. These standards regulate not only range and energy requirements, but also compatibility with devices from other manufacturers. Otherwise, devices communicate only to a limited extent or not at all and cannot be centrally controlled.

“Article” needs to change that. The best 280 members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance CSA, including Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung, approved a standard last fall to standardize communication between smart home products from different providers and enable parallel use of different smart home systems. .

«Matter» devices are compatible with each other

If a product carries the “Matter” logo in the future, it should be ensured that it is compatible with all other “Matter” products. The first new products have already been rolled out, and various manufacturers have made existing smart home products “highlights” through a software update.

Version 1.0 of “Matter” already covers many common smart home devices. This includes lighting, heating and cooling technology, security sensors, door locks, keys and even televisions. The standard defines the key features that manufacturers must provide for these products. But you can go beyond that and offer additional functionality. Various devices in the smart home are connected via the “Multi-Admin” function. For example, a smart home lamp can be controlled via Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant.

Smart home with more security

The “Article” also defines minimum requirements for security and data protection. All products must be touch-proof, messages over the network must be encrypted and authenticated, and protective mechanisms must prevent malware from being installed on the device.

As a uniform industry standard, “Matter” has the potential for reliable and secure connections. If the devices work together seamlessly, the smart home will be the final breakthrough and with it an important step towards making the energy consumption in the home as efficient as possible.

Other important developments are expected. CSA recently announced that it has formed a working group to develop a standardization and certification program for health and wellness technologies. This is a particular topic that focuses mainly on how IoT devices can interoperate with wearables and other future forms of healthcare technology.
