Why should we soap only four parts of the body when showering?

The Swiss spend about 1.8 billion Swiss Francs on cosmetics and personal care products each year. Many of them are unnecessary, says German dermatologist Yael Adler (49). Human skin renews itself every four weeks by permanently shedding dead skin cells. The hydrolipidic film protects the skin from microbes from the environment and has an acidic pH of 4.8 to 5.3. According to Adler, the following should be considered in order to avoid damage:

one

Soap only four areas of the body

Adler says you only need soap for your armpits, lower folds, groin area, and feet when you shower. Because if you wash your whole body with shower gel every day, the protective mechanisms become unbalanced. “This makes the skin more susceptible to allergies or irritation.” Adler adds that anyone who showers every day should use water occasionally. If you take a long, hot shower, your skin loses its moisture. “One cat wash is enough.”

The dermatologist recommends not soaping the whole body with shower gel.

2

Use light products

Adler recommends mild shower gels and shampoos with a pH of about 5.5 and no fragrances or preservatives. Washing agents made from coconut fatty acids and sugar are the gentlest to the skin. They are identified in the ingredient list as sodium cocoamphoacetate or cocoa-glucoside. Most cleaning products contain sodium laureth sulfate. According to Adler, these should be avoided if you have dry skin. They have a strong degreasing effect and wash the hydrolipidic film from the skin. Redness, skin irritation or dandruff may occur as a result.

3

Remove makeup with water and towel

“In the evening, lukewarm water and a hand towel or microfiber cloth are all it takes to remove dirt and dust from your face,” says Adler. However, light makeup can also be removed. Residual particles left on the skin are less stressful for the skin compared to removing the protective layer with strong cleansing agents. However, when removing heavy makeup and mascara, a special cleaning agent such as oil is required.

4

Apply lotion to dry areas

Adler says that only areas of skin that are dry and tight need additional care. «Too much of a good thing puts a strain on the skin and can lead to impurities and cosmetic acne, especially on the face» Biomimetic creams are suitable for dry areas. These contain skin-like oils and are particularly good at repairing a damaged hydrolipid film. Adler: “You can use pure, unrefined shea butter if you want to keep it simple.”
