When the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” hit theaters in early April, it was already becoming clear that the video game adaptation would lure the masses to cinemas – both in Germany and around the world. Almost a month later, the animated adventure has finally become a mega hit:
The Super Mario Bros. movie has now grossed over $1.022 billion, making it one of the top 50 highest-grossing movies of all time (Not including inflation). The film is currently ranked 48th, having already overtaken The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – and is likely to gain a few more spots in the coming days and weeks. For example, the film has now also opened in Japan and made the biggest Saturday gross of a Studio Universal film of all time with $ 14.3 million (previous record holder: “Jurassic World: A New Age”).
But the film also defended its top spot at the box office in Germany – and how:
4 million tickets sold – and counting
According to initial estimates, some 430,000 people wanted to experience the screen adventure of the most famous plumber in pop culture history last weekend. All in all, the film has already broken the 4 million mark, further extending its lead at second place in the yearly chart. This is now occupied by “John Wick 4”, for which 75,000 people bought a ticket last weekend. The fourth ball with Keanu Reeves has already sold more than 1.58 million tickets in Germany. By the way, the “Super Mario Bros. Movie”Top gun: Maverickat the local box office. Megahit Tom Cruise, incidentally the biggest blockbuster ever, managed to lure 3.72 million people to the cinema in 2022.
For Mario and Luigi, this already means a place among the most successful films of the 2020s. This ranking currently leads “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” (10.1 million tickets sold) ahead of “James Bond 007 – No Time To Die (6 million tickets sold) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (4.6 million tickets sold). Place 3 therefore seems within reach for “Super Mario”…
Best Newcomer of the Week: “Evil Dead”
After the fifth “Tanz der Teufel” film “Evil Dead Rise” had already inspired the trade press, the audience flocked to the cinema at the beginning of the horror revival and made the horror shocker a success from the start. In Germany, 135,000 tickets were bought, which means second place in the current weekly charts. The film has already grossed $86.5 million worldwide – almost six times (!) its budget.
“Manta Manta – Second Part” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” complete the top 5 of the local charts. Til Schweiger’s cult sequel sold 57,500 tickets again and has already had more than 1.1 million visitors. Dungeons & Dragons sold 45,000 tickets this weekend (625,000 in total).
