The small community of Saint-Julien in the French viticulture region of Bordeaux is known for its elegant and classic red wines. In the middle is the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, which dates back several hundred years. During World War II, the winery was occupied by German troops and suffered significant damage. In the following years, it was managed by various owners and was bought in 1988 by the Borie family, who still run the winery and sometimes even live on it.

The heavily cultivated vineyards of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou mainly grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot black grape varieties and have been officially certified organic since 2018. Strict selection and conservative viticulture methods produce a wine that can compete with the truly big names here in Bordeaux. It is not surprising, therefore, that Château Ducru-Beaucaillou wines have carried the noble Deuxième Grand Cru Classé predicate since 1855.

That’s how valuable a bottle of 1955 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is.

Blick reader Jörg Hürlimann is lucky because 1955 is often considered a big year in Bordeaux and has produced a number of dreamy wines that, if stored well, still offer great drinking pleasure today. In general, wines from the right bank of the Gironde basin or the Dordogne river, such as Saint-Emilion or Pomerol, were superior to wines from the left bank, which included the municipality of Saint-Julien.

Opening an almost 70-year-old wine bottle always involves a certain residual risk. Unfortunately, there is a relatively high chance that Jörg Hürlimann’s bottle peaked years ago. In this case, the wine should mainly exude oxidative notes of dried figs and tertiary aromas such as leather, cork or earth. However, the perfectly preserved bottles maximize the potential for wine enjoyment and at the same time bring a fresh note of mint, velvety tannins and plenty of smoothness. Well-preserved 0.75 liter bottles currently cost between 500 and 800 francs on the world market.
