James Gunn And The Guardians Of The Galaxy: It just goes together like bad luck and brimstone. However, the collaboration between the director and screenwriter and the chaotic mess ends with “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3”, as Gunn has moved to DC and the Guardians cast has already largely retired from the MCU. It will also be difficult for many Marvel fans to experience new adventures from this or other Guardians after Gunn’s departure.
A new statement from James Gunn also shows how closely connected the director and his characters are: In an extensive article in the American industry magazine It said Gunn is “enthusiastic but also protective” about the idea of handing over the Guardians of the Galaxy series to another director or screenwriter. How difficult it can be for a successor is shown by “Avengers 3: Infinite War‘, marking the first time the Guardians were not directed by Gunn.
Gunn felt the Guardians’ actions did not fit with the storylines and developments he is committed to, the report said : “They did some things I wouldn’t have wanted to do,” Gunn said. And there are also two examples: Star-Lord very well would have shot Gamora under James Gunn’s supervision if she had asked him to. And Star-Lord wouldn’t have hit Thanos the moment the Avengers overpowered him and doomed the universe.
Well-founded criticism of “Avengers 3”?
That last decision in particular was repeatedly criticized by fans when “Avengers: Infinity War” hit theaters in 2018. And surely, that Star-Lord didn’t keep his feelings in check long enough for Spider-Man to pluck the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos’ hand may seem illogical. However, the Guardians’ leader has just learned that Thanos killed his beloved Gamora.
And that leads us straight to the second scene that Gunn criticized – because this is where the “GotG” director mixes things up a bit. Or at least it sounds that way, as it does formulated in the article:
Than Star-Lord tries to shoot Gamora in Avengers 3, after some understandable hesitation. However, soap bubbles only come out of his gun because Thanos already has the Reality Stone in his glove and can use it to influence his environment at will. And as Avengers 3 screenwriter Stephen McFeely revealed in 2018, this scene was changed at the request of James Gunn and Chris Pratt:
Perhaps Gunn means this part of the statement as a contrast to the much-criticized Thanos boxing scene. Or would he have wanted Star-Lord to instantly remember the promise he made in an earlier scene and be less hesitant to shoot Gamora in the face of the threat of Thanos and the Infinity Stones? Unfortunately, this cannot be deduced from the article.
one thing is certain: “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” will be released in German cinemas on May 3, 2023.
