Fast food harms the brain

With the aging of society, Alzheimer’s is on the rise. “NZZ am Sonntag” has more than 151,000 dementia patients living in Switzerland and more than 28,000 diagnosed with dementia each year. Experts predict that these numbers will double by 2040. In many cases, one study says lifestyle harms the brain.

An Australian professor claims to have found relevant evidence that lifestyle, particularly diet, has a significant impact on healthy brain function. Professor Nicholas Cherbuin, from the Australian National University’s (ANU) Research Center for Aging, Health and Wellbeing, used the harsh headline, “Eating extra hamburgers a day eats up the brain” to summarize the research results.

A standard fast-food meal of burgers, fries, and soda is about 650 kilocalories—more the amount people eat on average today than they ate in the 1970s. The result: nearly one in three people is overweight.

Not only calories, but lack of vitamins, fiber and minerals can damage our brain and waistline. “We found strong evidence that unhealthy eating habits and prolonged lack of exercise pose a serious risk of significant declines in brain function, such as dementia and brain atrophy.” The risk of type 2 diabetes also increases.

Eat healthy and exercise a lot from an early age

Cherbuin is ringing alarm bells because “a clear link between brain deterioration and unhealthy lifestyle habits” has been proven: “The damage is nearly irreversible.” That’s why it’s important to “eat healthy and get fit as early as possible”.

One type of dementia is Alzheimer’s. Many people with dementia and other brain disorders, including shrinking brains, eat too much bad food and don’t get enough exercise in their lifetime, Cherbuin said.

And once neurodegeneration, the loss and function of neurons, begins, there is no going back. Cherubin’s advice is simple. 60 years old is too late. From a young age, you should pay attention to a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. (cut)
