Switzerland has more and more population. The 9 million mark could be broken this year. In recent years, the population has grown by 0.7 to 0.8 percent each year.
These numbers worry some people. But how many people can Switzerland tolerate?
Real estate consultancy Wüest Partner investigated how many people would own space in Switzerland in today’s conditions – that is, without zoning more building areas or reducing living space per capita. According to the news of CH Media newspapers, the company comes up with the figure of 11.4 million. At least.
According to the study, the cantons currently inhabited by the most people have the greatest growth potential. Wüest Partner calculated that Zurich alone could house around half a million people.
There are a little less than 300,000 people in Bern and Vaud, and around 200,000 in Ticino and Aargau. At the other end of the ranking are Appenzell Innerrhoden, Nidwalden and Obwalden. According to the calculation, the second canton has more space for 1,000 people.
Sibylle Wälty, a spatial planning researcher from ETH, even assumes that 16 million people in Switzerland could theoretically be possible, as SRF recently reported. But then it would have to be built much more compactly. And houses in cities, for example, can be increased several times.
But are these numbers realistic? The federal government considers the most likely scenario to be around 10.4 million people in Switzerland in 2050. The most important growth factor is migration. However, it is also possible that the temporary peak will be reached in a few decades and the population will again shrink somewhat. (a)
