After “Obsession” on Netflix, here’s how to stream the grandiose 1990s original

Obsession on Netflix is the adaptation of Josephine Hart’s suspenseful erotic thriller novel Doom. The miniseries is all about William (Richard Armitage, “The Hobbit”), who seems to be living the perfect life. But then he falls in love with Anna (Charlie Murphy, “Peaky Blinders”), his future daughter-in-law. The two embark on a wild affair and William soon becomes obsessed with Anna and animal sex.

Of course, anyone who has already seen the four episodes of “Obsession” knows how it all ends. However, the dangerous spiral, at the end of which there could be the destruction of two lives, is so fascinating that one would like to pick up the material again. And you can! Because already in 1992 the novel “demise“ eponymous of Nouvelle Vague icon Louis Malle (“Elevator to the jetty”) filmed. At the time starring Jeremy Irons (“The Lovebirds”) and Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”).

Do you want to see “Death” after “Obsession” now? That’s no problem at all! At Amazon Prime Video, the intense erotic thriller is available in the paid version Rental and purchase version* available. If you prefer to put the movie directly on your home shelf, you can also order the Blu-ray or DVD from Amazon:

1992’s “Death” is so good

Louis Malle, Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche are actually three strong arguments for not having to think long about whether you really should watch ‘Death’. And yes, the names certainly stand for quality here too. While starring Jeremy Irons proves once again how self-sacrificing he can throw himself at characters who are not morally correct, Louis Malle uses his immense experience without his production coming across as mellow.

In fact, “fatal” could cause a minor scandal of its time, because Louis Malle does not shy away from staging the sex scenes between Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche with the necessary generosity. But that has nothing to do with it being an end in itself, but rather describes the relationships between the characters, who are always on the verge of failing themselves. This gives Fatality an almost existential urgency that introduces us to characters who pursue their obsessions with vehemence as if it were the last time.

In summary, one can say: Even if you’ve already seen “Obsession” on Netflix and know exactly how the story ends, you still need to watch Louis Malle’s “Death.” The atmospheric density of the production and the excellent actors ensure that you are willingly drawn back into the familiar story. The swirling erotic tensions do the rest.
