The two films “Sherlock Holmes” and “Sherlock Holmes: The Game in the Shadows” have grossed more than a billion dollars internationally, so it wasn’t long after the second part in 2011 that the call for another sequel got louder. The plans for this were made quite quickly, everyone involved was euphoric – but so far nothing has come of it.
In 2019, it was said that “Rocketman” creator Dexter Fletcher would take matters into his own hands and replace Guy Ritchie as director – until Corona came along and “Sherlock Holmes 3” was called off again. We haven’t heard much about the sequel since then. Only Ritchie spoke up again, claiming that it was entirely up to protagonist Robert Downey Jr. And now there is finally a very fresh explanation.
Everything depends on Robert Downey Jr.!
Over the years, Downey Jr. repeatedly revealed in interviews about other projects that he has not forgotten about Sherlock Holmes 3. However, he was never really specific. Now his wife and business partner Susan Downey has spoken – and has good news!
On the podcast Producer Susan Downey has spoken extensively about Sherlock Holmes 3 and said the film remains a high priority for her husband Robert: “If everything is good, we will do it. If we have the right people. It’s still important for the company and also for Robert.” Unfortunately, she didn’t comment on “when”. But the fact is: Sherlock 3 is not off the table!
“Vertigo” is Robert Downey Jr.’s next project.
Until we get to see Sherlock 3, we’ll definitely have to be patient. Robert Downey Jr. should have plenty to do in the near future. For example with the new edition of the absolute cult classic “Vertigo – From the Realm of the Dead” by Alfred Hitchcock. In the remake, the star will take on the lead role played by James Stewart in the 1958 original, following in giant footsteps. After all, “Vertigo” is not only one of the most important films of all time for the FILMSTARTS editors…
