The alpine garden on Schynige Platte in the Bernese Oberland is located at 1967 meters above sea level. More than 700 plant species from the Swiss Alps live here in a small area and in their natural habitat. This allows visitors to get acquainted with almost two-thirds of the Swiss alpine vegetation on a one kilometer tour and at an altitude of only 40 meters. The Alpine Garden can be reached in a few minutes from the mountain station of the Schynige Platte Railway.

Bödmerenwald is located at the end of the Muota valley in the canton of Schwyz. With an area of approximately 550 hectares, it is the largest primeval forest in the Alps. A good starting point for nature walks is the forest gazebo on the Pragel Pass road. This is also where the “Urwaldspur” themed track begins. This 3.5 kilometer circular route, exceeding an altitude of 170 meters, is one of many hiking options in Bödmerenwald. A brochure in the pavilion provides information on the flora and fauna of the habitat, its geology and human use. The brochure is also available online. The primeval forest reserve can only be reached by car via a narrow mountain road, and the exhibition in the pavilion will only reopen from mid-June.

Between the Pilatus-Kulm summit station and Tomlishorn LU, which is also manageable for less athletic hikers, a flower path is arranged. The well-safe high-altitude hiking trail stretches for about three kilometers along the sunny south side of the mountain ridge and is particularly exciting in June/July when most of the Alpine flowers are in bloom. At the end of the trail, a short but steep ascent awaits you, rewarded with stunning panoramic views from Tomlishorn peak. Pilatus-Kulm can be easily reached by public transport from Alpnachstad or Kriens. There is an online brochure for Alpenpfad.

The white blooming daffodil meadows above Montreux on Lake Geneva invite you for a walk from late April to early June. The five-kilometer “Path of the Daffodils”, which starts and ends in Les Avants, can be covered in two hours. However, it is worth stopping by for a picnic against the lake along the way. Always be careful not to step on daffodil meadows and collect flowers, as this habitat is endangered by more intensive use of agriculture and increased home construction.

The Stockhorn mountain railway started its summer season in April. From Erlenbach in Simental, the gondola takes you to the summit station at 2,190 meters above sea level. A short nature trail along the summit trail has about 95 nameplates identifying alpine plants that bloom from spring to fall. The accompanying book “The Colorful Plant World of the Stockhorn Region” is sold at the valley station for ten francs. The nature trail can easily be combined with other hikes in Stockhorn, such as the summit climb from Chrindi mid station.

There are more than seventy orchid species in Switzerland. These often very rare plants can be discovered on numerous hiking and nature trails. A visit to Jurapark Aargau is particularly suitable for this. Typical locations for orchids are sparse pine forests and rather dry and south-facing hilly meadows. Two dozen different orchid species can be admired, especially on the Linn nature and culture trail, a four-kilometer circular route from the Bözberg-Linn bus stop, in the Sagimülital section. The flowering period is between May and June. Another option is the Erlinsbach Orchid Trail.

From mid-March to mid-October, the funicular takes you from Lugano-Paradiso to the summit of San Salvatore in twelve minutes. The panorama from here over Lake Lugano to the Po Valley and the peaks of the Swiss and Savoy Alps is worth the trip alone. The descent to Morcote takes about 3.5 hours and follows a ten kilometer well-signposted road. After the first descent and a beautiful section through the forest, you reach Carona, the artists’ village known for its botanical garden Parco San Grato. Among other things, rhododendrons, azaleas and conifers grow here. It then passes through a chestnut forest and descends hundreds of steps down to the lake at Morcote. Before returning to Lugano by bus or boat, it is worth visiting Parco Scherrer with its collection of exotic plants such as cypress, camellia, bamboo, araucaria and many more.
