Spawning sites disappear with new buildings

Swallow’s nest in a building. The Swiss Institute of Ornithology offers tips on how to deal with building planters. (archive image)

As the Sempach ornithological station explained Tuesday, conflicts of interest between birds’ needs and people’s demands are often programmed when birds choose a building as their breeding ground. But indoor growers often have a hard time these days. Acceptance of birds as neighbors has decreased, and their access to nesting areas in the building has been denied.

The habitat for birds is also gradually decreasing due to structural reasons. Modern buildings often lacked suitable breeding grounds. Old buildings that are still rich in niches or niches are often demolished or renovated. It was said that a large number of breeding grounds are lost each year.

In practice, there is often uncertainty about how to deal with nests in buildings. A digital decision-making aid will now help. It was developed by the Swiss Institute of Ornithology in collaboration with the Swiss Conference of Hunting and Fisheries Managers and the Principality of Liechtenstein (JFK).

According to the ornithological station, nests that have been used for several years, such as the swallow and the swallow, should be preserved. If this is not possible in some cases, nesting aids should be offered instead.

According to the announcement, building breeders include, for example, the common sparrow or the house sparrow. They raise their young in hollows under bricks, walls or blind boxes. The Common Swallow and the Barn Swallow have a special strategy. They stick their nests of hundreds of clay lumps to the outside of buildings or to the ceiling beams of barns.
