The Central American country of El Salvador is located between Guatemala and Honduras. Unfortunately, El Salvador’s reputation is not very good. The image of gang violence and civil war still hangs over the country – a lot has happened in recent years, especially after the 2019 elections. However, the Federal Foreign Office recommends extreme caution and a set of security measures in the country. The positive thing about it: El Salvador is off the beaten track of large tourist flows.
El Tunco Beach is famous among surfers around the world – some say it has the best surfing waves in the country. Accordingly, the small town is in full beach party surf mode, which incidentally also attracts the local population on weekends (you better come on weekdays). Accordingly, the infrastructure with accommodation and restaurants is well developed. Beitos restaurant is especially popular. It is right on the beach and is ideal for a sunset with soothing live music. One of the most popular dishes in El Salvador is papusa. These stuffed meatballs are available at most local restaurants.
About an hour’s bus ride north of the capital, San Salvador, is the city of Santa Ana, which has a strong American influence and primarily serves as a base for exploring the surrounding area. There are scooters or cars for rent here that are perfect for an hour’s drive to the volcano. My approach itself is nice. Be sure to plan a stop at Lake Coatequeque. When you arrive at the park entrance, continue to the volcano with a guide. In about an hour, you reached the crater, in which a green lake is bubbling. Also, the view from the mountain (when the weather is nice!) is great.
Tamarindo Beach, with its large bay, is located near the town of La Union, about a three-hour drive from San Salvador. Golfo de Fonseca’s bay is huge and offers beautiful views of the distant Conchagua volcano and Nicaragua. Tamarind, named after the tamarinds grown here, is one of the most untouched and least visited beaches in the country. Therefore, if you want to relax, this is the place for you. The sea with its calm water is also an ideal bathing area.
Fly: Also suitable for tamarind boat trips. For example, deep-sea fishing or the island of Zacatillo.
El Zonte beach, also known as Bitcoin Beach, is located about ten kilometers from El Tunco and belongs to the La Libertad region. While the interior of El Salvador has a lot to offer, the coastal region has so far been the most developed for tourism. Surfers will find world-class waves here. However, the area also offers many highlights for non-surfers. Besides El Tunco and El Zonte, the small, peaceful towns of Mizata, Shalpa, La Perla and the oddly named K59 beach are also worth a visit. The latter also offers the best surfing conditions. They are connected to each other by a meandering coastal road and each has its own character.
Anyone traveling with a rental car or a local “chicken bus”, the country’s most common mode of transport, will love Ruta de las Flores. It stretches along the Apaneca hills in the west of the country and contains a group of picturesque villages. These include Juayua, Apaneca, Nahuizalco, and Salcoatitan. Here visitors come to appreciate the peaceful life of the Salvadoran people. From coffee culture to nature experiences and delicious restaurants to bustling local markets, each of these places has their own uniqueness.
Fly: The climate of this region is pleasant and fresh and attracts national and international travelers. At the garden cafe Entre Nubes, for example, one can admire the diversity of plants.
Where Juayua is part of the Ruta de las Flores. The place name comes from the Nahuatl language and means: “River of purple orchids.” On weekends, a popular gastronomic festival is held in front of the church where the Black Christ (Cristo Negro) is worshiped. In January, the most important moments of the festival are celebrated with a parade. One of the highlights around Juayua is the Los Chorros waterfall, which is worth seeing from La Calera. It is about two kilometers from the city.
