The call for action was issued in the UK this week, after dermatologists noticed an increase in people developing “life-changing” allergies to gel nail polish. In addition, the government’s Office of Product Safety and Standards is currently investigating.

Chemicals in gel nail polish, known as methacrylates, can cause an allergic reaction if they penetrate the skin, causing nails to loosen and develop a severe itchy rash on the skin, experts warn.

A gel manicure at home is most likely the cause of the reaction, which is caused by a UV lamp that hardens the polish and is not used long enough or the equipment is poorly maintained.

But even salon nail treatments can be risky. if the technician is not well trained.

If the gel does not ‘harden’ enough in the appropriate amount of time, there may be a reaction to the chemicals in the skin around the nails.

Conditions include loosening and falling out of the nails, sores on the toes and red, swollen cuticles, Dr Deirdre Buckley told the BBC.

“Even worse, they can become sensitized to acrylates in other products, which can have implications in dentistry, if they’re diabetic, or for orthopedic surgery and that’s lifelong sensitization,” he added.

The expert added that many people are unaware of the possible medical and dental implications if they become sensitive to nail methacrylates.

In dentistry, these chemicals can be found in white fillings, and they also include diabetic glucose sensors and insulin pumps.

“It is important that people are aware of the potential risks of artificial nail products, whether they are applied in a salon or at home,” he added, advising people to seek out trained professionals on site to undergo these cosmetic procedures.

In the case of nail technicians, it is important that they use the appropriate equipment to protect themselves.
