After Amazon acquired MGM last year, there is now news about, among other things, what Amazon plans to do with the deal in the future. As has now been announced, a “RoboCop” reboot is in development. It should not only become a feature film, but also a series. It is said that the TV series will be released first on Amazon Prime Video. However, nothing has been confirmed about this yet.
Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 “RoboCop” is an absolute classic of sci-fi action cinema. Long indexed, the movie was able to become a cult classic, not least because of its elaborate brutality. In addition, the brutal tear is also a grim satire on an oversaturated society that is almost suffocating in violence. It starred Peter Weller, who played police officer Alex Murphy, who was killed in the line of duty and then brought back to life as RoboCop.
Not the first reboot attempt
Meanwhile, the RoboCop franchise includes not only RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, but also two live-action TV series (one from 1994, the other from 2001), two cartoon series for children (from 1988 and 1998) and a whole series of comics and video games. In addition, attempts were made in 2014 to relaunch “RoboCop”. At the time starring “Suicide Squad” star Joel Kinnaman. However, the reviews and public reaction were negative.
In addition, there were numerous attempts to bring the franchise back to life. Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), for example, was once commissioned to write and direct “RoboCop Returns,” a direct sequel to the Paul Verhoeven original. However, he left the project, which eventually got lost in development hell. “The Whale” director Darren Aronofsky should make a remake one day, but then chose “Black Swan”.
Incidentally: RoboCop isn’t the only MGM brand Amazon wants to reboot. In addition to the science fiction classic, titles such as “Legally Blonde”, “Barbershop” and “Stargate” should be given another chance to inspire the public. What will ultimately become of it remains to be seen.
