Philips’ Ambilight technology uses smart LEDs on the back of the television to create an ambient lighting atmosphere that enriches any movie night. The colors of the screen are beamed into space. The screen appears larger than it actually is and the entire room is bathed in the colors of the film or series. With Avatar 2: The Way Of Water, which you can now enjoy in your home theater, your living room is bathed in sea blue.
Since no other TV manufacturer installs a smart backlight, your only option is to buy a Philips TV or retrofit the lighting. The most popular alternatives are the Govee TV backlight. After we introduced you to the Govee DreamView T1 last week, today the Govee Envisual T2 in Amazon’s lightning offer for only 117.49 euros. To get the price, you have to activate the 10 euro coupon on the product page.
This is how the cheap Ambilight alternative works
The lighting set consists of an LED strip that you mount on the back of your TV and a double camera that scans the screen and transmits the colors to the smart LED strips. To ensure that the colors are really accurately displayed, calibrate the colors with a white balance via the app during setup.
The Govee T2 does its job surprisingly well. In contrast to official retrofit solution from Philips* does the alternative work with all the content flickering on your TV. The Philips box, on the other hand, is only controlled via HDMI and therefore does not work with streaming apps that you operate directly via the TV.
Phillips can do that better
However, Govee’s solution isn’t quite perfect either. Some may be visually disturbed by the small camera placed on the TV. The camera also detects reflections in the environment, which can distort the colors of the LEDs. However, if you provide an environment with few reflections, the Govee T2 does its job very precisely and is in no way inferior to the Philips solution, which is almost three times as expensive.
