The author of this article recalls one day when future Shoot ‘Em Up director Michael Davies’ “Monster Man” was featured in his local video store. He had never heard of this movie, but he didn’t have to. A cool cover, disturbing scene footage as well as a thick “uncut” sticker and an 18+ rating were enough to pique his interest. After all, he was only 15 years old at the time – and therefore also in the phase in which people especially like to test their limits. Those of the parents, but especially their own. In this case, he was rewarded with a fun, entertaining splatter battle record.
More than 20 years later “Monster Man” celebrates its German uncut premiere on Blu-ray on April 25, 2023 and thus really urges another viewing to check if the film still works as well today as it used to. Fans of disgustingly muddy genre films who don’t take themselves too seriously should still be able to enjoy it even after more than two decades – soon also in HD for the first time!
Wicked Vision has taken on the highly anticipated German Blu-ray premiere of Metzelorgie and releases the fun splashes in three strictly limited Mediabook editions. Both Mediabook A and Media Book B* And Media Book C* are limited to 333 pieces only and includes the movie on Blu-ray and also on DVD. As usual, the three variants differ only in their design or different cover motifs, but they also have the same content – and in addition to the film, they offer a 24-page booklet about the film, a making-of, an audio commentary and more.
“Monster Man”: horror between “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Jeepers Creepers”
Adam (Eric Jungmann, “Not Another Teen Movie”) and Harley (Justin Urich, “So High”) pick up hitchhiker Sarah (Aimee Brooks, “Critters 3”) on their way to a wedding in the southern United States – where nothing short of the ultimate horror awaits. And no, we don’t mean racist southerners or awkward conversations with friends and acquaintances who use the wedding parties to ask why you’re not married yet…
…because the Monster Man rules here! The locals know that, of course, because they have already been rid of one or the other body part by the killer, who has a monster truck for a vehicle. And now Adam, Harley and Sarah threaten to run straight into the arms of the bad guy.
Wicked Vision announces the movie as “true jewel of garbage” somewhere in between “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” And “Jeeper creepers” is located – and it’s getting along pretty well. Yes, of course, the movie doesn’t enjoy the cult status of a chainsaw massacre, nor did it make waves like the Creeper. Although the parallels in terms of content can hardly get out of hand, “Monster Man” is ultimately somewhat reminiscent of lesser-known genre productions such as “2001 Maniacs” from 2005. And that is not meant in a negative way at all!
“Monster Man” is a low-budget production – and it shows. Especially considering that But the horror fun scores with more than decent handcrafted splatter effects that should really excite gorehounds and also makes much more expensive productions look quite old. Because director and author Michael Davies compensates for his limited resources with a lot of creativity, so that it is not at all surprising that he then managed to make the leap to Hollywood.
