Panamanian students learned about NASA projects

Panamanian students toured the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) headquarters in Washington, USA, where they got first-hand information about three projects carried out by the US federal agency.

It is about a group of four students who are part of it student branch of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and the Electronics-Panama Section (IEEE-Panama) at the Universidad Latina (ULATINA) in Panama.

A group from the IEEE-Panama Student Chapter that traveled to POT It was composed of ULATINA engineering students: Jendall Barría, Krystel Villarreta, Mercedes Tristán and Seidy Gordón. In 2021, they were elected for winning team globally in the NASA Space Apps Challenge with “Most Inspiring Project: A Solution That Won Our Hearts” which consisted of a system to monitor illegal logging in the Darién Gap area using satellite imagery and NASA EARTH data for environmental conservation and environmental benefit local population.

Thanks to that victory, a group of Panamanians who called BIOSHIthey were invited to NASA headquarters where they interacted with other hackathon participants to exchange ideas, share experiences and learn best practices in project creation directly from NASA experts.

“All in all, the visit to Washington was an experience amazing and enrichingsaid student Krystel Villarreta.

“The team members were very honored to have the opportunity to tour the facility and learn first-hand from NASA experts who are currently leading major projects in space and on Earth,” he added.

Additionally, he said, “We’re very excited about what future awaits us in terms of developing and creating cutting-edge technology and what it represents for Panama”.

There are students at the United States agency ulatina They learned about the development of a SWOT mission that will aim to calculate the height of the world’s oceans, rivers and lakes to help scientists measure how bodies of fresh and salt water change over time.

The mission is scheduled to lift off Dec. 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
