“The Super Mario Bros. Film” opened in German cinemas on April 5 and the first predictions speak of an animation mega hit. The Brooklyn plumber brothers’ first animated adventure could be one of the biggest hits of 2023.
The film could gross over $125 million in its first weekend in the United States and Canada alone, and $225 million worldwide in its first few days.
Next week, we’ll know for sure how successful the movie has been at the box office worldwide. Of course, such crazy box office predictions already raise the question of what a sequel is like and what it could be about. In any case, if the numbers are correct, we have no doubt that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will be announced soon, especially since part 1 already gives some story clues for a possible sequel…
The post-credits scenes provide clues for the sequel
Danger! Spoilers follow for the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Of course, towards the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and Luigi have made it: Brooklyn is safe, the Mushroom Kingdom has been saved, and Bowser and his minions have successfully fled. The pesky upper lizard Bowser could be reduced to the size of a turtle by a mini mushroom, making the bully look almost sweet and cuddly.
Don’t be put off by his size, of course, as the mini-bowser swears eternal vengeance in the mid-credits scene if he manages to escape his prison. And anyone who’s ever played a Mario game knows that the fire-breathing Bowser is no flash in the pan.
Should the leader of the Koopa Troops find a way out of his birdcage prison, the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom better watch out, as Bowser may be on his way again.
More Yoshi in part 2!
What was sorely missed in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was Mario’s little green riding dinosaur, Yoshi. In just one brief scene, the heroes could make out a pack of colorful Yoshis in the distance, peacefully going their separate ways. But if you still have some stamina after the end of the movie, you can find a very special “Easter Egg”.
Because in the post-credits scene, we slowly move through the remains of Brooklyn’s battered sewers until an egg comes into view, which of course Mario experts can immediately identify. Of course, this is a Yoshi egg that somehow ended up in our world with all the dimensional tube chaos. So we can almost certainly look forward to a lot more Yoshi action in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2!
A new threat?
Maybe Luigi, Peach & Co. will get it. facing an entirely new threat, after all, the Mario universe has a few more exciting opponents to offer that could make life difficult for the plumber brothers in the future. How about the Broodals, for example? This pesky bunny gang for wedding planners presented Mario with a few challenges in Super Mario Odyssey.
However, there may also be a clash with the Koopalings. This gang of seven siblings consists of Iggy, Larry, Lemmy, Roy and Wendy O. Kooper. The team is completed by Ludwig von Koopa and Morton Koopa Jr. These older members of the Koopa team should not be underestimated despite their cute looks.
However, for the author of these lines, there can only be one villain duo that should definitely make their movie debut in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2”: Wario and Waluigi. These greedy and adept outlaws are the counterparts of Mario and Luigi in the Nintendo Universe – when the money is right, the two villains are there for any crime. Even if the two certainly can’t compete with Bowser in terms of physical strength, the cunning villains should definitely keep the plumber brothers on their toes.
