For many people, Easter is primarily a family celebration filled with delicious food, Easter egg hunts, chocolate Easter bunnies, and colorful eggs.

Easter in Hungary

This tradition seems rather unpleasant. On Easter, men are allowed to pour water on women. It is intended to purify women and thus increase fertility. Since today’s women don’t really need to clean anymore, there is an alternative to involuntary showering: Men are allowed to use perfume to make women’s long hair smell good.

2

Easter in Sweden

Easter is to Swedish children what Halloween is to other children. On Easter Monday, they dress up as witches and go door-to-door asking for candy. This tradition has its roots in ancient legends. It is said that the witches gathered for the witch dance on the famous Blocksberg meadow that day.

3

Easter in Brazil

“Semana Santa” (Holy Week) is of great importance to Catholics in Brazil. The population makes carpets from sawdust, flour, sugar, and whatever they can find. However, in some places straw dolls are also made to represent Judas.

4

Easter in the Czech Republic

This Easter tradition is also quite special. Similar to Hungary, on Easter Monday, men are allowed to hit women’s buttocks with sticks. The stick is decorated with colored ribbons and is not intended to cause pain to women. This ritual should only serve to preserve the beauty and fertility of the ladies.

5

Easter in Greece

As in many other countries, Easter morning begins with a ritual. However, things really heat up in Corfu after the fair. At exactly 11:00, people start throwing pottery and all kinds of other ceramics around. This tradition was first done on New Year’s Eve to get away from old things. But over time it was postponed to Easter.

6

Easter in England

In some parts of Great Britain, Easter is celebrated with the help of the folk dance “Morris”. This dance dates back to the Middle Ages and is said to bring good luck. In earlier times, it was usually held in a king’s palace.

7

Easter in Italy

Our neighboring country is known for its traditional history. Customs should not be missing at Easter either. In Florence, a chariot pulled by two white oxen is set on fire with the help of fireworks. This tradition existed thanks to the Crusaders who wanted to use this fire to purify themselves from all evil.

8.

Easter in France

In the town of Haux, 4,500 eggs are processed to make a single omelet that feeds nearly 1,000 people. The story tells that Napoleon stood in this village with his army and had an omelette. He liked it so much that he ordered the townspeople the next day to make a giant one for his army. However, there are no official records of this event – therefore it remains a legend.
