Serge Roh introduces the unique cultural treasures of his homeland. Petite Arvine dedicates one hectare of its vineyards to Amigne alongside native varieties such as Humagne blanche and Cornalin.
Amigne is a fine, very delicate grape. It tends to drip and open. But those who show a lot of interest in him, like Roh, will be rewarded.
The variety is known for its transforming abilities: anything from bone dry to sweet nectar is possible. «Sweet wines smell intensely of citrus, pears and dried apricots. Due to the naturally high acidity of the variety, its taste is wonderfully balanced. She shines in all of these roles in her own unique way,” says Roh.
He also takes part in many scenes. “I like the change of perspective: I’m a winemaker, businessman, presenter and drummer.”
Despite his many commitments, Roh radiates a deep calm. Even when the blackbirds attacked the Amigne harvest for sweet wine in 2021, leaving only grapes for a case of wine, he remained steadfast. “My job always brings moments of surprise.”
So he didn’t know if his courage would pay off when he launched the first late harvest of Amigne (Grain Noble), aged in oak barrels, modeled after the legendary Sauternes at the Château d’Yquem in 1996. It was worth it, the wine was impressive, extremely storeable and still holds a special place in his portfolio today. Since then, Roh has gone through many fire baptisms and has proven himself repeatedly in competitions.
The remains of Roh’s wine cellar are in demand. His charismatic products graced the wine lists of starred restaurants and placed them on the shelves of a New York vintner.
On the one hand, Roh attributes its success to high quality standards. On the other hand, his efforts at a young age bear fruit. “We wine growers in Vétroz put all our heart and soul into promoting our wines. This includes the introduction of the Grand Cru designation, which is reserved specifically for wines of high quality and typical characteristics,” says Roh.
Amigne de Vétroz became famous with the introduction of the bee label by the local wine growers’ association, of which Roh is a member. Busy bug indicates how sweet the drop in the bottle is.
One bee represents a dry, young and fresh wine and two bees represent a fine example, while complex dessert wines have three bees on the label.
Born in the middle of the grape harvest in 1963, Roh is celebrating his 60th birthday this year. But he’s not thinking of quitting yet. “I don’t want to hold on to anything, but I want to actively support the younger generation.”
Youth spirit is not lacking in Cave Les Ruinettes. It is gratifying that two of his three children have been trained in this profession and that his eldest son, Vincent, has started working in the family business. Although the candles on the cake won’t be lit until October, Roh has already received a gift. “The 2022 wine harvest has been great. This is a very special gift. But there will still be some surprises for the festival… Perhaps a large format of my 1963 red ensemble carries the old version and the Vétroz postcode». So we can get excited and wish Serge Roh a great anniversary!
