In his video, Sebastian talks about the full fifth episode of the third season “The Mandalorian”, in this text we want to go into detail about the last minutes. In which we should be concerned about Captain Carson Teva, who certainly has become a fan favorite not only thanks to the great performance of “Star Wars” superfan Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, not only for the author of these lines, when he entered the expanse of the space-devastated starship explored. But it’s not an ambush, it’s just confirmation that Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) was never actually brought to justice. His prisoner transport is ambushed. This has been teased before, now the confirmation followed.
But what does it mean that Gideon was able to escape? How does it refer to those with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“ sequel trilogy started? And more importantly, what about the piece of Beskar metal that Teva finds here?
Is a wrong track being laid here…?
The first conclusion, which should be obvious to many: Here someone wants to steer suspicion in a certain direction. After all, why would Mandalorian assassins leave behind a piece of their prized beskar? It could certainly happen by accident, but there are just a lot of indications that this is going astray.
Especially since the conspiracy around Gideon is aware of the danger of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), who has already stopped them once. Through Elia Kane (Katy M. O’Brian), they must now also be aware that even in the disorganized New Republic, there are forces like Teva on the alert. Putting both sides against each other sounds like a really good plan to keep operating in secrecy. What the imperialists are up to there will be explained later. First of all, it’s worth arguing that perhaps Beskar’s piece isn’t a distraction after all.
…or did Mandalorians really free Gideon?
As the flashback at the beginning of the episode reminds us, there are Mandalorians who are very unhappy that Din Djarin turned Gideon over to the New Republic. Paz Visla (Tait Fletcher) made it clear that he would have preferred to see Gideon dead. So he would have motive to attack the transport to kill Moff Gideon.
The fact that Moff’s body is missing speaks against that. Then why not do it right away and take a risk? No, the whole thing sounds much more like a liberation act. But again, we shouldn’t rule out the Mandalorians. This leads us to a point in the series that has puzzled not only the author of these lines for a long time.
It could be both – with the answer to the riddle of the evil Mando?
There are many more Mandalorians than we’ve seen in the series so far. We know that there are also parts of the people who followed the Empire and may now be loyal to Moff Gideon – especially since for a while he wielded the dark sword, which many considered a claim to power. So it is conceivable that he commands his own Mandalorians, who have now released him.
One thing in particular has made me suspect for a while that we’re still missing a key character in the Beskar armor: the evil Mando! Now if you’re wondering what evil mando, you’re looking like someone who skips the intro. Because there you see behind the Lucasfilm logo several helmets and droid heads in quick succession. The color scheme is interesting. Numbers on the right side like an R2-D2 or a C3-PO at the beginning or meanwhile a Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) in the intro that was new since the third season are highlighted in blue. After all, in the world of “Star Wars”, the color blue has always stood for the Jedi. On the other hand, figures on the evil side like Darth Vader or a stormtrooper are highlighted in red – because this color represents the Sith.
But since the very first episode of The Mandalorian, the last image in this series of intros is a Mandalorian highlighted in red. At first glance it looks like our Mando. At first I assumed this was just to show us that he was not on the light side of power. He is an opponent of the Jedi, his people deeply disagree with them. It is therefore logical that it is marked in red. But in the new Season 3 intro, that helmet is still red. In contrast, the helmets of the already mentioned Bo-Katan or the gunsmith who leads the convention (Emily Swallow) have a blue background. Since then I’ve been puzzling over this helmet and…
… starting to wonder if it belongs to “our” Mandalorian Din Djarin? If you look closely you will see differences such as scratches that this one does not have. So is the series teasing us yet another mysterious and evil Mandalorian right before our eyes that we don’t even know yet?
In any case, one thing is clear: the upcoming episodes are the perfect opportunity to introduce more Mandalorians. Finally, Bo-Katan sets out to collect them all. And she might find that some are on the other side, still clinging to the lost realm. A war may ensue between Mandalorians – which has happened many times in the history of Mandalore, as you can read in our article about it.
This is how “The Mandalorian” is preparing “Star Wars 7”.
If we now separate ourselves from the question of what the Beskar is all about in the final, The new episode of “The Mandalorian” shows once again how hard the series is now preparing for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” after the fact (if you can). Because you really wanted to bring back stars like Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill for the sequels, there had to be a huge time jump between “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force AwakensThus, very interesting decades of stories of how the New Republic failed and the First Order came into existence have been told only in fiction.
The Mandalorian kind of fills that gap. This brings us back to the questions we asked at the beginning: what does it mean that Gideon can escape? How does it reference the sequel trilogy that started with Star Wars: The Force Awakens? It’s safe to assume that Imperials like Gideon never stopped following Palpatine. They continue to run the Empire in secret as the First Orderto return their guide at the end. A legendary “Star Wars” villain like Thrawn should also play an important role here.
Interestingly, Captain Carson Teva suspects that the presence of the pirates in the new episode of The Mandalorian has to do with the fact that the Empire has not yet been defeated. It has been suggested in novels already published that this corresponds to the policies of those loyal to the Empire. They use pirates, bandits, etc. to finance the building of a new army (see again “Star Wars 7”), but also to keep the galaxy unstable. Because that means many planets and their inhabitants would welcome the return of a strong hand to bring order, it would be harder to revolt again.
We should get more answers soon. The next episode of “The Mandaloriancoming to Disney+ on April 5, 2023.
