A stone’s throw from Basel is the famous French viticulture region of Alsace, where around a quarter of all wine is bottled as sparkling wine. Crémant d’Alsace is made in exactly the same way as champagne by secondary fermentation in the bottle and consists of the grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois or Riesling. Unlike champagne, Crémant d’Alsace is mostly pressed from a single product and is not mixed with other wines. If you’re looking for straight frothers with a sharp acidity and almost unbeatable value for money, you should definitely try the wines.

When you think of Italian red sparkling wine, do you think of Lambrusco first? Then it’s time to get to know the popular Brachetto d’Acqui from the Piedmont viticulture region. Unlike Crémant d’Alsace, sparkling wines named after the DOCG-annotated dark Brachetto grape variety are generally sweet, only slightly sparkling, and exude vibrant aromas of fresh and candied red berries and floral notes. Vibrant brachetto brings spring straight into the wine glass.

Admittedly, our northern neighbor Germany is best known for its fairly simple sparkling wines made from grapes from all over Europe. This is not the case in the category of sparkling wine, where the winery can only use its own grapes, and sparkling wines must be squeezed the traditional way, i.e. in the same way as champagne. While several grape varieties have been approved for Winzersekt, the most exciting wines are made from Riesling, combining fresh fruit flavors with smoky toasty notes and a tangy acidity typical of the grape variety.
