It is estimated that chronic disease affects 10 to 15 percent of women of childbearing age and almost half of women who cannot have children. Yet countless patients are not misdiagnosed. Here are a few key facts about the common disease.

What is endometriosis?

In this disease, the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb – usually in the ovaries, lower abdomen, or fallopian tubes. In some cases, endometriosis spots can also be seen in the bladder, bowel, vagina or cervix.

Endometriosis lesions bleed during menstruation, which can cause inflammation. A consequence of this can be cysts and adhesions.

What are the symptoms?

Endometriosis symptoms can vary greatly. Many women experience severe pelvic floor pain and experience depression and fatigue during their menstrual periods. It is also often difficult for them to become pregnant. In some cases, the pain is constant. A study by the World Endometriosis Society Foundation showed that 44 to 61 percent of all women with endometriosis surveyed suffered from chronic pain for more than six months.

Can the pain be relieved?

Hormonal birth control can relieve some of the pain in some women. Another option is to put the body into an artificially induced menopause – this temporarily stops the growth of endometriosis, giving the affected organs time to heal. If that doesn’t help either, complete surgical removal of the uterus and cervix may be necessary.

Is there a cure?

The causes of endometriosis are the subject of research and are still largely unexplained. Therefore, it is currently not possible to prevent their occurrence. There is currently no medical or surgical treatment that can completely cure the disease.
