Thousands of tiny stones are affixed to the walls of Jürg Duchilio’s (67) childhood home in Thun BE, colorful tiles and unusual furniture complete the overall picture. “This house is my big love,” the owner tells Blick. “I’ve never spent more time on anything than decorating this house.” Today, it is hard to imagine that the Tuscany house, with its many colorful details, was once a perfectly normal detached house with a white façade.
The trained hairdresser has worked thousands of hours on the property to create a one-of-a-kind vacation home. “I always worked at the hair salon from Thursday to Saturday – I did the rest of the work here,” she recalls. “I took over the house ten years ago and was able to host my first holiday guests here in 2017.” He points to a wall paved with many small pebbles and says with a grin: “And now I’m rich.” The holiday home is showered with praise from holiday guests on the Booking.com booking portal.
But his life’s work narrowly had to collapse again. When the Thun native inherited the house in 2013 and spontaneously decided not to sell the house, he did not obtain a building permit for conversion. “I actually wanted to break a wall in the living room,” he explains, looking around the villa. “But somehow one thing led to another and everything turned into a bigger project.”
During the remodel, it received numerous accolades from the neighborhood. “A neighbor also said they had connections with a reporter who could cover a particular house.” That’s why the same person was stunned when he suddenly reported to the authorities in 2021: “He claimed that I don’t have a building permit for the facade decoration and that my new garden wall was not built in accordance with the law.”
Duchilio is particularly angry that the neighbor didn’t speak at the start of the renovation. “He waited several years until the transformation was completely over. What a cheek! » The hairdresser, who has lived in Neuenkirch LU for many years, finally applied for the subsequent building permit.
The hairdresser shuddered for months for the labor of his life. “I glued every brick in this house myself. I can say that I do 90 percent of the work entirely by myself,” she says, her eyes shining when she talks about the different materials she works with.
Finally, on March 15, 2023, salvation came: “I got the next building permit!” Jürg Duchilio is incredibly relieved not to have to restore the house to its original state. “Finally, the holiday home is almost completely filled again for this season.”
