In the early years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, movies like “Iron Man” and “Thor” were still closely linked and eventually culminated in the first crossover adventure “The Avengers”, but now the MCU is way too big and expansive for that . So there will likely be several small mini-MCUs over the next few years, grouping together several thematically appropriate characters – like the sub-section that started with “Hawkeye” centered around the New York underworld. And there’s apparently a real epic story planned here for years to come, aside from the big storyline about Kang and “Avengers 5” and “Avengers 6”.
Filming is currently underway for “Daredevil: Born Again”, which will see not only Charlie Cox appearing as Matt Murdock of Daredevil, but Vincent D’Onofrio once again playing villain Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. Before that, however, D’Onofrio also appears in “Echo” and the entire storyline should then lead to “Spider-Man 4” with Tom Holland. But one after the other:
Will Wilson Fisk Become Mayor of NYC?
Like the usually well-informed Marvel insiders of report and Snapshots from the filming of Daredevil: Born Again confirm Wilson Fisk is running for mayor of New York City in the MCU series. This storyline also exists in the Marvel Comics and would begin in Echo before Fisk is actually elected mayor in the Daredevil series.
That may not happen until the second season, “Daredevil: Born Again,” which D’Onofrio recently interviewed announced. However, it is considered likely that he is just resources, that the 18 episodes (!) long first season “Born Again” is divided into two halves. In any case, D’Onofrio announced a huge reward (“payoff”) for the fans for the second season / second half. Does he mean the mayoral election?
Kingpin vs. Daredevil, Spider-Man & Co.?
It doesn’t matter when and how Fisk becomes mayor: the sources of according to him it is (unsurprisingly) not about the well-being of the people of New York, but about his personal vendetta against superheroes like Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, Daredevil and Spider-Man. These are Fisk like ““, i.e. characters who patrol the streets on their own and protect people, an eyesore.
Reportedly, Fisk then wants to try and control the “vigilante crisis” by putting some mercenaries on the heroes and heroines. Maybe that’s where the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) comes into play, who also appears in “Born Again”? In any case, this whole aspect should be an important part of the plot of “Spider-Man 4”.
In fact, many Marvel fans suspect that the Kingpin will become the villain of “Spider-Man 4” and then take on Peter Parker, Daredevil and other characters. He already proved in “Hawkeye” that he can hold his own in head-to-head combat against superheroes. And Charlie Cox’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home may have set the stage for the two characters to see each other again in a later MCU film…
When does the Kingpin saga begin?
It will be a while before we can see all this on Disney+ or in the cinema. According to D’Onofrio, the recording of “Daredevil: Born Again” should last until December 2023 (!). “echo‘ has already been filmed, but will not start until 2024 – and as the individual MCU series will get more space in the future, we don’t expect the first half of Born Again until late 2024 or early 2025.
And “Spider-Man 4” with Tom Holland (and possibly also Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio) will probably be a while away. In February 2023, Marvel boss Kevin Feige revealed that work had begun on the script “Spider-Man 4” probably won’t hit theaters until 2025 as well.
