During an appearance on the radio program “X-Files” creator Chris Carter announced a surprise reboot of his hit series: “I just met a young man Ryan Coogler, spoken. He will re-release ‘The X Files’ with a diverse cast. So he has a lot of work to do because we’ve covered so much already.”
It comes as a surprise that Coogler, who has been nominated twice for his role as producer of “Judas And The Black Messiah” and for the title song in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” is making a new “X-Files.” series. Nothing has leaked so far.
Hollywood industry magazines immediately questioned Coogler, X-Files rights holder and Disney subsidiary 20th Century Television, but received no response. It is known that Coogler and his company signed a contract with Disney in 2021 to develop several series for the Disney + streaming service in the coming years. Is the X-Files reboot a result of this deal?
Another “X-Files” project is probably dead
Carter himself was also involved in another planned “X-Files” series. The animated series X-Files: Albuquerque has been in development since 2020. Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko probably already wrote the script for a pilot, but that has now failed. The portal reports that TV channel Fox, which aired the original series and should have shown this project, rejected it.
The X-Files: Albuquerque allegedly targeted a second team at the FBI working on the X-Files instead of Mulder and Scully. This team had to get those cases that even Mulder and Scully thought were too stupid and ridiculous. It would have been more of a comedy series that way.
It is not known whether this comedy series – possibly to the relief of many fans – has now been canceled because Coogler is in the process of a reboot or whether both things happened independently. After all, a new series that then explains that the solo-acting FBI-ridiculed duo of Mulder and Scully still had a team behind them somewhere didn’t seem like such a good idea either. It is not yet possible to assess whether the X-Files restarts from the Marvel director really comes, as all that is known is Carter’s few words about it.
