Many only associate movies and series with Netflix. But the streaming giant with the red N is also active outside that area. In addition to video games, Netflix has also gained a foothold in the field of comics: in the summer of 2017, the comics label “Millarworld” was bought back. Almost a year later, the first Netflix comic series was released featuring “The Magic Order” from author Mark Millar (“Kick-Ass”, “Kingsman”) and Marvel artist Olivier Coipel (“Thor”, “New Avengers”). And it really hit the spot right away because it was loud deadline the first issue of the series was the most successful new comic book launch of the last 20 years at the time.
With “The Ambassadors” a new comic series is now starting at the label. Of course, Millar was active as an author again. Frank Quitely, Travis Charest, Olivier Coipel, Matteo Scalera, Matteo Buffagni and Karl Kerschl were each commissioned to create an edition of the comic, each in a different country. Because “The Ambassadors” is about a worldwide competition in which six people worthy of receiving superpowers are sought and who represent their country together with them as a kind of superhero ambassador.
Will The Ambassadors be the next superhero series on Netflix?
Of course, the streaming giant does not want to suddenly build a second mainstay as a comics publisher, but plans to create additional content for its own platform through the comics publications in the medium term. In the meantime, Netflix has already deployed a number of Mark Millar-written titles in serial form, including “Jupiter’s Legacy” and most recently “The Chosen One” (the comic is known as “American Jesus”), whose first season has already been completed.
“The Ambassadors” could also expect a series rollout soon, especially since the comic’s regional split also satisfies Netflix’s desire for tailored content for different regions and would even be ideal for a growing franchise – at least that’s how comic creator Millar sees it in an interview THR:
“One of the great advantages of streaming services over cinema is that you can do something so crazy and ambitious. Home audiences are usually the most important thing for a US studio, especially opening weekend. With an all-non-US cast and all locations abroad , it would be a hard sell if it was a traditional theatrical release, but I’m just as excited about Korea, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and France as I am about audiences in California or New York It’s also exciting for Netflix, as these are all growth markets.”
While it’s not unlikely that the comic series will be serialized on Netflix, there’s no information about that at this time..
