Turning out the lights around the world

At 20:30 on March 25, 2023, the lights in Lenzburg’s old town go out for one hour. However, highlights are not illuminated in about twenty other cities in Switzerland. This also applies to buildings in a total of 190 countries, such as the New York Empire State Building or the Tadj Mahal. The aim of the campaign is to draw attention to environmental problems.

Darkness is designed to indicate waste of resources and make people think. This campaign was launched by WWF in 2007 in Australia. “I want as many people as possible to give the world a watch and be interested in the question of what they can personally do to protect nature and the climate. “The fact that so many cities and people participate in Earth Hour shows how much people care about protecting nature,” writes WWF Switzerland president Thomas Vellacott.

“With Earth Hour, we are calling on people to do more than simply turn off the lights symbolically. Under the motto “Give the world an hour”, WWF encourages people to be active and give something back to our planet: 60 minutes that you can spend in different ways,” WWF writes.

st. Gallen is hosting an Earth Hour weekend that includes a biodiversity march, and Burgdorf BE hosts a poetry talk on the topic.
