Erythritol, a sweetener that could affect health

New research has found that erythritol, a popular artificial sweetener, is linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The findings of this study, conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, were recently published in the medical journal Nature Medicine.

The researchers found that those with higher levels erythritol in blood were at high risk of experiencing a cardiac event a major adverse event, such as a heart attack, stroke, or death.

They also examined the effects of adding erythritol to whole blood or isolated platelets, which cell fragments which collect to stop the bleeding and contribute to the creation Blood clots.

The results revealed that erythritol facilitates activation platelets and clot formation.

Preclinical studies have confirmed that swallowing erythritol increased clot formation.

“The sweetened as erythritol’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, but more research is needed on its long-term effects,” said lead author Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., president Lerner Research Institute Division of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences and co-director of the Division of Preventive Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic.’

The authors stress the importance of follow-up studies to confirm their findings in the general population.

He added: “Cardiovascular disease develops over time, and disease Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. We have to make sure that food that we eat are not hidden collaborators.

Erythritol is about 70% sweeter than sugar and is produced by fermenting corn. After ingestion, the body metabolizes erythritol poorly. Instead, it goes into the bloodstream and leaves the body mainly through urine. He body naturally produces low amounts of erythritol, so any additional intake can be added.
