The Latin Grammys have new categories

The Latin Recording Academy, the organizer of the Latin Grammys, announced this Tuesday two new categories, one of them for songs in the Portuguese language and a new area in these awards, with changes in the existing ones, to accompany the “constant evolution” of music.

“It is our commitment to serve and properly represent the creators of Latin music,” Manuel Abud, executive director of the Miami-based Academy, said in a statement two days before the nomination process for the 2023 awards began.

The candidate composers in that area they must have a minimum of six newly written songs for which they are credited as a songwriter or co-author and for which they are not a performer, producer or engineer, the press release states.

Singles or songs in this new category may include fusion urban styles with other genres as long as the urban character prevails.

In addition, the Academy announced a change to the Album of the Year category, which states that at least 51% of the total time for albums in the General Area must be newly recorded material.

The artist or producer(s), engineer(s), mixer(s), masterer(s) and songwriter(s) get 33% of the total time on the album unless approved by the artist himself.

In song categories, it is now mandatory to include the date of the song when submitting a product.

There are also new criteria for the best recording technique for an album, such as “awarded to accredited recording engineers and mixing engineers with at least 33% of the album and masterers who have at least 51% of the album within the Production Space”.
