A movie is only as good as the script, so in the case of Gears Of War, we can hope for a strong edit. How reported, because will Jon Spaihts to write the screenplay for the Netflix movie Gears Of War. And Spaihts knows science fiction very well…
The screenplays for Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus – Dark Signs” and the MCU adventure “Doctor Strange” are on his hat, among others – as well as for the much-maligned “Passengers”, which we don’t want to leave unmentioned here. But in our FILMSTARTS review it actually fares well with 3.5 stars, and Spaihts’ screenplay for the sci-fi drama even landed on the so-called blacklist, i.e. the list of the best Hollywood screenplays not yet made into a movie – the material so it was good. But Jon Spaihts has celebrated the greatest success so far with his screenplay for the mega blockbuster “Dune“…
Oscar nomination for screenplay “Dune”.
Jon Spaihts, along with his co-writers Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth, even got the script for the acclaimed sci-fi epic in 2022. nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. And Spaihts is again involved in the screenplay for “Dune 2”, which will hit theaters on November 2, 2023.
In FILMSTARTS and Moviepilot’s 2021 joint best film list, “Dune: Part One” clearly took first place – so we are now very curious what Spaihts will write for “Gears Of War”. Jon Spaihts said in a statement about the game : “It wants to be cinema and I’m very happy to get the chance to make that happen.”
The HBO series “The Last Of Us” has just impressively demonstrated that modern video games with their complex narrative structures can also be well suited for cinematic implementations – but video game adaptations often still have a bad rap. Spaihts now has the opportunity to change that (a little).
