Study provides new insights into avalanche risk

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

The SLF of the Federal Forest, Snow and Landscape Research Institute (WSL) said Tuesday this will help better assess the avalanche danger. In parts of Spitsbergen, snow cornices are the cause of around 45 percent of all avalanches.

According to new research, if the wind blows too weakly, snow accumulates on the terrain more evenly. If the wind blows too hard, it carries the snow far beyond the obstacle. Because cornices need a hill on which they form. They spawn there downwind, mostly on the steeper side.

The research team from Switzerland and China modeled such a ridge from snow and placed it in a wind tunnel. A snow machine provided the necessary snow crystals. These circulated in the annular channel at different wind speeds. The results were recently published in the journal The Cryosphere. Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne were also involved.

Until now, few scientists have looked at how these formations develop. This was because the cornice often took days or even weeks to form under ever-changing conditions. (SDA)
