Last week, Jackie Chan was a guest at the HongKong Film Art Market. During his critically acclaimed performance, the ‘Rush Hour’ star announced that ‘New Police Story 2’ is in development – with Chan as the lead and producer. But that’s not all, as martial artist and pop star Nicolas Tse (“Raging Fire”) has also been confirmed to direct the film. Here he makes his directorial debut.
Of course, fans of Jackie Chan are extremely happy with the announcement of “New Police Story 2”, because after ten years one of the most legendary action series in the work of Jackie Chan continues. The franchise began in 1985 with Police Story, in which Chan battled drug lords and police corruption as a Hong Kong police officer. This was followed by “Police Story 2”, “Police Story 3” (including “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star Michelle Yeoh), “Police Story 4” and “Police Story 2013”.
More character drama than action again?
In the meantime, namely in 2004, a kind of offshoot of the series “Police Story” appeared with “New Police Story”, which actually has nothing to do with the original, but is still considered canon. In it, we don’t see Jackie Chan as a merry fighter, but as a guilt-ridden alcoholic who lost his team after being trapped. “New Police Story”, which already featured Nicolas Tse with Jackie Chan, focuses less on action and comedy than on darkness and Chan’s serious acting.
It is not yet known when “New Police Story 2” will appear. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2024. It is also unclear whether the focus will return to the character study. But before we know for sure, we first experience Jackie Chan in a completely different franchise. Chan Splinter lends his voice in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”, which will hit German cinemas on August 3, 2023. More information about the project (incl. trailer) can be found here:
