Unfortunately, it’s no longer uncommon for streaming services and cable channels to have to wait well over a year for a series to continue, especially with particularly complex productions like the 2022 fantasy highlights “House Of The Dragon” and “Der Herr der Rings: The Rings of Power,” the second seasons of which will not appear until 2024. And even with “The Last Of Us,” it will take some time after the recently released season finale for the dystopian series to return to the home screens, likely even longer than previously thought.
The early confirmation of a second “Last Of Us” season also led many to assume that we could expect the new episodes as early as 2024, albeit possibly not until the second half of the year. However, leading actress Bella Ramsey herself provided a sobering update on the production…
‘The Last Of Us’ season 2 not until 2025?
“It’s going to take a while,” Ramsey explained on Britain’s The Jonathan Ross Show (via ). “I think we’ll probably be filming late this year, early next year. So that will probably be late 2024, early 2025.”
Of course, as can be seen from Ramsey’s wording, her statements are just conjecture (there’s no set date yet for the shooting), so nothing is set in stone here. However, in this case, these assumptions come from a person directly involved in the production.
And if the first take does not actually take place until the end of 2023 or even the beginning of 2024 (probably due to the extensive preparation and the busy agendas of those involved), we unfortunately now consider the start in 2025 even more likely than a release in 2024. This would put Season 2 on the air at least two years after the start of Season 1, which aired in January 2023. We can only hope that it will be ready at least early in the year.
Expanded production despite story division
Actual shooting for the first “Last Of Us” season took 200 days, followed by time-consuming post-production. Season 2, which is based on the even more complex second game “The Last Of Us”, now has the potential to take even more production time, even if this is due to the planned division of the story into (at least) two seasons should not escalate too dramatically.
Nevertheless, one thing is certain: it will be a long time before Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal) continue to fight their way through the mushroom post-apocalypse after the shocking end of the first “Last Of Us” season. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can of course already experience your further adventures with the masterful game template “The Last Of Us Part II”.
